Connections to the Kite Runner By: Sukhjinder Sanghera. In the novel, “Kite Runner” written by Khaled Hosseini from chapters eight to twelve I formed many various connections with the protagonist, Amir. Amir as a young boy would desperately seek Baba’s attention, which became a major reason why Amir felt pressured to participate in the kite flying competition. However, when he finally got Baba’s approval, Amir once thought this would strengthen their relationship, but in reality, Amir finally realized that Baba’s approval was useless. The main protagonist is called, “Arthur” who also like Amir is trying to redeem himself by trying to right his wrongs. Arthur is portrayed as an outlaw in the twentieth century and is a member of Van Der Linde's gang, showing intense loyalty to his family and doesn’t question the orders he’s given. Arthur suffers a lot of death throughout the course, but like Amir, he pretends to go on with life as usual and forget about it. It’s fascinating to see this dynamic of how both of these characters grow in development (personal growth) and are trying to achieve the same goal, which is finding redemption. However, in doing so, they both encounter many challenges like Amir being in this stage of denial and Arthur discovering the diagnosis and what it means. I think these chapters may also foreshadow the following events of Amir trying to make amends for what happened with Hassan, whereas Arthur, realizing he has little to time left, tries to do acts of kindness and self-sacrifice to forgive himself for the reckless actions he did in his past. Overall, it is believed that both characters are reconsidering their life choices and trying to find a way how one could redeem one’s self and with this closure they both need for them to move on with their
