As a parent and former retail store manager, I am not at all surprised by the content of this video and I don't see how anyone else would be either. Actually, I believe this video is by far out dated because today's parents of young children grew up with the same type of marketing directed at them. "Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood" examines the practices of pervasive marketing techniques directed at young children arguing it is more insidious than just trying to sell products to today's youth. The video looks at the many different methods used to directly market to children successfully. Marketing avenues include not only television, but cell phones, social networking sites, games and even our school systems. Although much of this is the response to extreme advertising, I think our group, or the people around us have a much larger effect on this particular way of thinking. It is human nature to want to be accepted, and instinctual to think higher of those who possess more material things. Children have always wanted more, it's just now they're actually getting it from their parents. Those kids without brand name products may feel poor, mediocre and important, that they are not part of the social group at school. Now products are not being advertised for what they actually are but instead the social status that they can give one who possesses it. Such as implying something will make you cool or part of the in-crowd. The businesses have successfully convinced us that we are what we own and we follow. Our society has defined these social classes and decided that your material assets have a large impact on where you stand in the
