Summary
The Elementary episode, “Crowned Clown, Downtown Brown” begins with action right away. There are two men chasing after a clown in the woods. They finally lose the clown and see him dead buried under leaves. The men found the clown to be murdered, which occurred 36 hours prior to their search. Around the same time detective Marcus is waiting to meet Chantel for a date. He is sitting at a bar when a man tries to start a fight with him. Detective Marcus later finds out that the man who started the fight was Chantel’s ex-husband trying to cause problems. There was action at the beginning of the scene where the crime presented itself. However, the bad guys and good guys are not completely identified or predicted yet until late in the show. The audience doesn’t know what to believe yet about the clown or who the suspect could be. Later on, another problem presents itself with New York City’s water being contaminated. This leaves the audience wondering how does this connect with the clown’s murder? Holmes and Watson are investigating and interviewing different people, which gives the audience multiple assumptions about who the suspect could be. The audience begins to have more fear and emotion to figure out what is truly happening. At the end the bad guy is finally conferred. He ends up being one of the public workers for the city’s water who the detectives had been in contact with all along. He had hired a man to do the contamination and while he was doing so, he murdered the clown. Elementary does fit in with a twist in good vs. evil. The audience is to believe the clown is the bad guy. However, this is a misconception because the clown had nothing to do with what the true crime of the story was. This shows how the writers of the story gave a turn at the end. The audience thinks they have it figured out, but it ends up being someone they least expect. When there is a mystery to the case and the audience is not able to figure it out right of the bat, then the writers will keep their fans coming back for more. The makers of the show did not make everything evident, otherwise the viewers would begin to think the show was boring. Most viewers want a challenge when trying to figure out a case/show. They want to figure it out on their own and feel the emotion throughout the story. Elementary continues to ride the lines of multiple genre types to keep it interesting to its viewers by, incorporating people’s personal life with a crime/mystery. This involves more of a drama, mystery, suspense and crime genre. Viewers want to be able to relate to the characters of the story.
