The novel Desert Blood: The Juárez Murders starts with introducing Ivon Villa, a lesbian professor that lives in Los Angeles, traveling to her home town of El Paso, Texas to adopt a child. She is the spouse of Brigit and they want to start their own family. While on a plane she meets a Texas cowboy named J.W. that was bothering her throughout the whole flight. Irene (sister) and Ximena (cousin) pick Ivon up from the airport. Later that night Ximena and Ivon cross the border to pick up Cecilia, the pregnant Juárez resident, from work but she clocked out early. Unfortunately, Cecilia was found dead the next day in a car rotting and Ivon, Ximena, and Father Francis go see her during her autopsy. Ivon meets a young boy named Gorge that is going to lose her mom to cancer and promises to adopt him for information of the murders. Irene ends up going to the fair by herself and met Raquel to get her in for free. Irene drank too much alcohol and ended up going to a party after a concert at the fair. Irene gets kidnapped and was last seen swimming in the Rio Grande. Since Ivon’s mom blames her for losing her sister, she puts it upon herself to find her sister, whatever it takes. Her investigation led to many dead ends even with the help of a beginner detective, Pete McCuts, from El Paso. She went around giving flyers of her missing sister and tried to find any little information or hint about the murders to use. Ivon runs into trouble with her cousin William for allegedly selling drugs. During a search they found another body, but it wasn’t Irene and they had come up with many theories including pornography, black market organ sale, and corrupt police officers. Ivon is stopped by the same guy from the plane flight to El Paso that was a border patrol chief and ends up being the guy behind the internet pornography site of the Juárez young
