In writing A Voyage Long and Strange, Tony Horwitz’s goal is clear, to educate others on early America and debunk ignorant myths. Horwitz’s reason for wanting to achieve this goal is because of his own ignorance that he sees while at Plymouth Rock. “Expensively educated at a private school and university- a history major, no less!-I’d matriculated to middle age with a third grader’s grasp of early America.” Horwitz is disappointed in his own lack of knowledge of his home country, especially with his background history and decides not only to research America’s true beginnings, but to also follow the path of those who originally yearned to discover America.

One of this week’s readings focused on Ch. 5, “Caged Birds,” in Professor Lytle Hernandez’s book City of Inmates: Conquest, Rebellion, and the Rise of Human Caging in Los Angeles, 1771-1965, and this chapter was particularly interesting because it further explained the development of immigration control in the United States. As a continuation from the last chapter, there was a huge emphasis in the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Geary Act of 1892. This essentially prohibited Chinese laborers from immigrating to the United States, as well as eventually requiring these people to comply with regulations. “Caged Birds” encapsulates the events afterwards, as the book heads well into the early-1900’s. Modernity has been mainly characterized by its imperialistic policies and colonizing endeavors, which while creating the current legal organization of the world have largely marginalized the many indigenous groups who originally occupied the conquered lands (Andrews and Walton 600). Although post-modern societies have seen an increase in the awareness of these matters, American-Canadian author Thomas King has dedicated his work to throwing light on issues still not tackled. In his short story “Borders”, King tells the adventure of a Blackfoot mother and her child, who try to cross the border to the U.S. but refuse to declare their nationality. The experiences of American immigrants is as diverse as the immigrants themselves. Joseph Bruchac’s grandparents were Slovak children who immigrated to Ellis Island. Bruchac, who is half Native American, perceives the mass arrival of immigrants as negative, since they took the land of the Native Americans through violence. He is torn between the immigrant part and the Native American part of himself. In contrast, Phillis Wheatley, who was forced into slavery and brought to America from Africa, sees this forced immigration as a positive.
The mid-19th century saw an unprecedented wave of immigrants coming into the country. At its peak, Ellis Island, the main processing station for immigrants, handled an astounding 5,000 people every day. Because of the language and culture barriers faced by each group of people, they often settled amongst themselves. Very quickly, country-specific neighborhoods began popping up throughout New York and the surrounding area. This helped to alleviate the stresses with moving to a new country; however, most immigrants came to the United States penniless and lived in low-income housing as their jobs rarely supported themselves let alone their families.

Ellis Island is a place where immigrants can go and get inspected and get to see if they can come to America and be legal immigrants. You have to take a boat to get to Ellis Island. The boat we had to take was old and but it looked nice and clean on the inside.

For the cinematography analysis of both movies, I will be basing it on the final scene of both movies. Music and sound In Romeo+ Juliet, the scene begins where Romeo is chased by the police and he runs into the church. There is dramatic opera music as he’s being chased, this music is in the background of all the chaos in the scene with the loud helicopter and the police sirens, and this anticipates a climax for the audience. This chaos dies down immediately when he closes the door of the church, religion is one of the themes in the story, so this symbolises that the church brings peace, although we do still hear the sound of the helicopter to signify that the police are still outside.
