My definition of rhetoric before the readings was simply: successful written or oral communication with a clear purpose & audience in mind. After completing the readings, I have decided that is not specific enough and does not encompass what rhetoric really is. The readings by Crusus, Channell, and Drucker helped establish a clear relationship between argument, “mature reasoning”, and communication as a mode used to communicate. Both of the readings provided a clearer understanding of argument and communication, key components to rhetoric, but did not change my definition until I read “The Rhetorical Situation” by Bitzer. The idea of a rhetorical situation, provided a clear application of the question: “What is rhetoric?”
Execution is the act of carrying out of a sentence of death on a condemned person. This is carried out either by lethal injection or electrocution. Execution despite its barbaric nature has survived in many legal system and will continue to because it: reinforces a state of security of the general public, detters other individuals from committing such crimes, and enforces the concept of cause and effect within the legal system. In the text “The Penalty of Death” H.L. Mencken discusses not only why he supports executions, but also the ripple effects this action has on a society. The author also developed pathos in her article by commenting that, “Jurors couldn 't held back tears as the judge announced the non-guilty verdict.” (Banks) It must have been something very unfair, to the extent of seeing people that carry the responsibility of justice agreeing that it was unfair! The audience may be able to analyze how Banks did an excellent job when it comes to pathos, as she included visualizations that might help the reader feel the same way towards the issue as Bank
Pathos is the expression of one’s emotions in order to evoke another person to feel empathy for them. In an untasteful execution, Crito accomplishes this by expounding how the eradication of Socrates will lead to a pessimistic brunt when he scorns “What it seems is that you’re letting your sons down too.” (Crito, pg. 885) trying to arrange for him a disturbance for not being there for his sons when he could have if he decided to escape and remain alive. John M. Barry addresses his feelings about scientists and their research through the piece from, “The Great Influenza,” an account of the 1918 flu epidemic. He adopts a speculative tone and utilizes rhetorical strategies such as fallacies, metaphors, and word choice to characterize scientists research. Barry describes the positive mind set and the requirements to be a scientists. The requirements of being a scientist would not only be, “intelligence and curiosity,”but to also to be open minded and to have courage.
Based on the readings and videos that you read/watched during week one, how would you describe “rhetoric”? What is “the rhetorical situation” and how do you see an awareness of this concept affecting your writing and behaviors? The word “rhetoric” is considered as the art of using language effectively and persuasively in any form of communication. So, it is omnipresent in our life.
Pathos is a rhetorical device used for providing emotion to the reader. He wants the reader to feel sympathetic towards the mistreatment of African-Americans. In the introduction, the first rhetorical device he introduced is pathos. Coates present pathos when he introduced Clyde Ross. He titles the first chapter as, “So that’s just one of my losses”.
Rhetorical devices is used significantly through both text, Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation, and A Fable for Tomorrow. Both text use ethos, pathos, and logos, but in different forms, and techniques. Which affects the effectiveness of the tone, and feeling of each text. Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation, uses more ethos, facts and credibility. A Fable for Tomorrow, uses more pathos, appeals to emotion.

Since its initial development back in the 1600’s, the death penalty has taken a different course in the way it is utilized. In its early days, the death penalty was greatly used and implemented for several offenses.
In his landmark essay, "The Rhetorical Situation," rhetorical scholar Lloyd Bitzer laid out some of the basic components of the rhetorical situation. Bitzer views rhetoric as a action and not just hot air and fancy words. He defines rhetoric as “A mode of altering reality, not by the direct application of energy to objects, but by the creation of discourse which changes reality through the mediation of thought and action.” He sees rhetoric as a way to learn how to get things done. Rhetoric can be applied to practical things.
Rhetoric is a way of speaking in a persuasive way to create an impact on the audience or have them think the same way as the speaker. The three main strategies of rhetoric speech is ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos meaning the speaker is dwelling upon themselves, pathos meaning the speaker is using imagination to create emotion, and logos meaning facts and logic is used by the speaker to persuade the audience. Socrates used logos in a way that helped him exhibit an effective speech to prove which type of knowledge is worth knowing. In spite of this claim, Socrates was truly only showing the court that he really did not know much more than his name.

This paper examines three executions: the execution of Mary Queen of Scotts in 1587, the execution of Joan of Arc in 1431, and the execution of John Wayne Gacy in 1994. In history books, all three executions represent the sentence of death on a condemned person. However, one difference is that the methods of execution and requirements to earn a death sentence have changed dramatically from 1431 to 1994. Mary Queen of Scotts was charged with “treason” and beheaded.
The type of analysis that I decided to do for my three PSA is rhetorical. Rhetoric in simple terms is how we use symbols made by human to influence and move other humans. When it comes to the analysis of rhetoric, you must look at the interactions between a text, the author/producer, and the intended audience. But more importantly, when doing this kind of analysis, you have to ask yourself and answer two questions. What does this text say and how does the text say it?
In 1962 President John F. Kennedy held a press conference in which he informed the audience on his stance for the rising steel prices. Kennedy not only wanted to inform the audience, he wanted to get them on his side of the argument. He wanted to show the audience that the rising steel prices were going to have a negative impact on the nation. To do this Kennedy used some of the rhetoric strategies and tools. He used periodic sentences, anaphora, and diction.
Although rhetoric can mean a host of different things, for the purpose of this piece, I mean it to be the study of the effective use of language. A study that is often neglected until a communication issue arises. I would suggest that, instead of waiting for a problem to arise, the rhetoric major can help employ a workforce better equipped for team work. The American
