No one really knows how it all started, it could have been the rotten coffee at the port, or the fleeing French. Who ever or what whatever it was, it happened and it affected Mattie in a big way. The biggest thing that affected her was, that her grandfather died in an accident with robbers.

In the beginning of this book on page 13 when polly died. Mattie wanted to go to polly’s funeral but her mother would not allow her to go. Because her mother was afraid she would get sick.
