Fever,. 1793. By: Anastyn Livingston. In the novel, Fever, 1793, Mattie is hard working, independent, and matures over time. She faces yellow fever and other obstacles in the story. This tells you how Mattie is a very amazing character and how she's changed over time. During the novel you can tell that Mattie is very hard working, when her mother gets the fever Mattie ends up taking care of her mother and working at the coffee house. Also after the fever, she came home to her coffee house and it was trashed. So she turned the coffee house back to how it was and she ran it with Eliza. In the text it states, “I fetched a fresh pot of coffee from the kitchen. Eliza and Mother 876yb 4ddidn’t say a word to me; there was too much work to do. I poured coffee and tea, served oyster loaf and Indian pudding, carried the dirty dishes back to Eliza, and tried to keep the floor clean. I didn’t have time to worry about fevers or husbands or rude parrots.” This shows how Mattie was hard working and cleaned the coffee house when she was asked. …show more content…
In the novel it goes into detail about how she walks around the town alone to get the groceries, how she cleans the house alone, and how in the end she finds a child and keeps her safe and all that alone. In the text it states “Grandfather said. “It could have been a sudden pleurisy or a weak heart. You worry too much about it. Always have a good time. The market is the safest place in town, next to our own castle. Now let the child get some air.” As well as “As I crossed Fourth Street, the noise from the market splashed over me like a wave.” This shows how Mattie is independent and how she went out on her own and didn't need anyone else to help
