People argue and debate regarding whether or not to sentence juveniles to life in prison for murder. Even though the Supreme Court finally declared that juveniles who murdered should not be sentenced to life in prison, because it violated one of the amendments or in other words was unconstitutional, families of the victims could not approve it and continue fighting for the refusal of granting parole to convicted teens. There are some kids that can prove it. Greg Ousley was a teenager that committed parricide. He was just 14 at that time when he killed both of his parents. Ousley was sentenced for 60 years in prison, but his lawyer petitioned the prosecutor for a sentence modification. After many years of staying in prison he showed that he could change. He’d been inside the jail for 20 years. In the article, “Greg Ousley Is Sorry for Killing His Parents. Is That Enough?”, the author describes how Ousley gave his best to get his bachelor’s degree for liberal arts from Indiana State University while inside the jail. He went through anger and stress-management workshop. He showed a great progress with his behavior and became a model for his inmates (Anderson). Another example was my 17 year old cousin who was sent to rehabilitation center because of abusing drugs. Joel was emotionally unstable and had some family issue. After going through a rehab, he became mature and responsible like Ousley. He went to college and finished a degree. Proponents say that people should give them a second chance through rehabilitation. Juveniles are still kids so we should also consider that they are still developing and vulnerable. They commit mistakes and we shouldn’t ruin their lives because of that. We should help them become a better person parallel to what happen with Greg Ousley. Turn them into ideal citizens to show people they can change. The Supreme Court’s decision set out a valuable step to a better society which more constitutional. Kids have so much potential but we won’t able finding it out if we don’t give him/her a chance. The significant reasons why they should not be put to life in prison are because they are also victims of influential society and rehabilitation can greatly change
