One year after the atomic bomb was dropped in Hiroshima, Japan on August 6th, 1945, Hiroshima by John Hersey was published in 1946. It discusses the stories of six different survivors of the atomic bomb in which one hundred thousand people were killed and many more were injured. The tremendous damage to the city, the medical personnel struggle to aid, the suffering strangers who lost loved ones and were badly injured, and the devastating aftermath is all told in this book. John Hersey himself interviewed six survivors to get what it is was truly like to personally experience such emotional and physical damage and to tell their story of strength, grief, fear, and courage to the people of the world. Several men eventually help her out and she then waits with two other injured people. She is then transported to several different hospital to receive treatment and rehabilitation but is left crippled from the incident. She spends years supporting her younger siblings and eventually converts to Catholicism where she begins to help others in need. Dr Fujii is left in the river along with beams of what was left of his home and hospital. He eventually gets himself out of the water and from under the two beams that almost drown him. He is left with a broken collarbone and walks to a family home in town. He continues to be a medical professional and eventually opens a clinic in the spot of his old hospital, but many years later, he becomes very ill and passes away. Mrs. Nakamuro and her children are luckily left uninjured from the incident but suffer a little from radiation sickness. They end up leaving the city to temporarily stay with family before eventually finding a place to stay and she sends her children back to school, but they still struggle financially. Father Kleinsorge is also left relatively uninjured and begins to help the injured with their wounds and the uninjured to safety. Fear is caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous and likely to hurt them or can be a threat. Hiroshima, Japan was one of the few cities in Japan that had not yet experienced an air raid from the massive B-29 American bombers, and some of the citizens feared that the Americans were saving something special for the city of Hiroshima. There were already air-raid sirens set up throughout much of the city that indicated there was a possibility of danger from any unknown airplane in the sky, and the people were also told to evacuate to avoid the potential danger. Some of the people had already evacuated due to the constant fear and anxiety of an inevitable air raid and many were prepared in some sort of way for any possibility.
