Homless College Students Reading “Homeless on Campus” by Eleanor J. Bader gives an insight into the struggles college students who do not have a home go through. Throughout the story, some young adults struggle to make it to class due to transportation issues. While others have a hard time finding a place to stay. Many people do not understand what it is like to be homeless and attend school at the same time, however, Bader helps us understand the struggles that they have to live with. It gives me a better perspective on what homeless students have to go through. It makes you think about how hard school already is and how adding being homeless on top of that would be extremely challenging. I could not imagine what teens like Adriana and Johnny went through at a young age. It also makes the reader think about the kids who got kicked out of their houses at a young age and do not have the opportunity to attend school. The biggest takeaway I got from this article is that homeless students do not have enough money to pay for housing. This can be because they just do not have enough time to have a job or they just do not make enough money. A potential way that colleges can help their students is by providing a homeless shelter, which should be on campus for ease and accessibility. This would allow students to be able to commute to class and make it to more lessons. Like Aesha said she can not make it to all the classes she has because of the long commute she has. She had to tell her teachers that she would not be able to make it to every class leading to more challenges in the long run. If this was my situation, I would definitely want somewhere that would give me a place to stay.
