In What about Gender Roles in Same-Sex Relationships?, Stephen Mays critiques various gender stereotypes, including ones affecting gay people and straight people, both men and women. In Mays opinion, gender roles do not determine sex (male or female), therefore I agree with the author’s point of view that what a partner in a same-sex relationship may decide to do in a relationship is not pre-determined by their biological sex. Mays stated, “[d]espite sexual orientation, some people simply demonstrate more masculine qualities or more feminine qualities” (719). In gender roles, a male or female in the past was based on societies’ definitions that they are supposed to practice something that defines or pertains to their role in the relationship.
Both right-wing Catholics and Christians have deemed the LGBTQ community as dangerous and deviant to society. Judith Butler explains the religious use of anti-gender ideology, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, and sexism in their justification of oppressing queer and trans people. Religion has been placed against the LGBTQ community in constraining their bodies, legal and social rights, and overall freedom to exist. Since religion plays a large role in societal and cultural norms and values, Latinxs perceive Catholicism as part of their cultural identity despite its rejection of the LGBTQ community. As a queer Mexican American, I often battled with accepting my sexuality while maintaining a relationship with God.

Introduction Sexual conversion therapy is defined as “a process through which reparative therapists believe they can and should make heterosexuals out of homosexuals” by Chuck Bright, award winning psychology author. He goes on to explain that this practice originates from the belief that homosexuality is sinful and immoral, which comes from traditional religious beliefs (Bright 472). Gregory M. Herek, professor of psychology at the University of California, notes in his article that the term homosexuality was first brought up in the early 1900s to define a mental illness. In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and the APA called for psychologists to work to remove the stigma historically associated with homosexuality (693). This explains how there is a long history of negative connotations surrounding homosexuality socially, and it was not until recent years when there were movements made to change this.

The Atheist Movement: Why There are less Christians in America than ever Before Jaehun Lee Sitting in his Sunday School class, David Lee, a senior at St. John’s High School, listened to the instructor talk about the public’s sentiment regarding gay marriage. “ Well, Michael [the instructor] said something like ‘As recently as 6 years ago, 60% of Americans were opposed to gay marriage’” recalled Lee, “and then he talked about how changing religious demographics has let to the tables being turned.” Christianity has been on a downward trend since 1948, according to a Gallup poll from 2014, the number of protestant Christians was 69%, which briefly peaked at 71% in the 50s.
