I Saw the Light

People often say that money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy you things that make you happy, like buying a dog. So the idea of money not being able to buy you happiness is stupid. Happiness however is relative. For example, if you buy someone a dog you can make them happy, however if you buy a cat person a dog then they wouldn’t be as happy. This reflects the idea of happiness being a relative thing, and how it differs from person to person and this story is about my realization of this fact.

My story begins in a road called Lopez ave. The road had single lanes of both sides which was dumb, as there were thousands of cars there all the time. The engines of cars, trucks and busses rang. The sunlight was clearly visible through my mom’s umbrella, now that I think about it, it was damn hot that day. My mom and I were strolling peacefully down the sidewalk, and as we pass a bakery this kid walks into view. There was dirt dotted around his cheek, a sweaty odour enveloped him, his clothes were a size too small and littered with rips and stains. Then he looked up to my mom with his dirt ridden face, “miss, can I have some money for food please” he begged. I was aggravated when those words left his mouth, “what right does he have to ask my mom for money?” I asked myself. I looked towards the kid, he looked around my age, 12 ish. My mom grips my hand with enough force to break bones, then she glares at me as if knowing that I was frustrated. My mom agrees, and walks to the bakery we just passed and buys him cinnamon and a bottle of water. The kid’s expression is something I remember to this day, it was one filled with overwhelming joy, his
