The year 1969 was a year full of extreme racial tension. Race riots had already started, protests were in full swing, and racism was very front and center. Set around this time, in the play “No Saco Nada De La Escuela” by Luis Valdez, there are a group of six kids named Francisco, Moctezuma (Monty), Malcolm, Florence, Abraham, and Esperanza (Hopi), who go to school together, and each experience racism in their own way. Luis Valdez’s “No Saco Nada De La Escuela” highlights different aspects of racism through experiences in the lives of several students as they progress through elementary school, high school, and college.
The main idea of this entry is about the stereotypes that come along with racism. Also, Brent Staples wants his readers to realize how much colored people sacrifice from their normality in order to fit in with society, in hopes of not being attacked or offended. This fictional short story had a powerful meaning because it focused on how racial stereotyping can cause a lot of problems even among young girls who were attending a Girl Scouts camp. “Brownies” also showed how stereotyping can actually be harmful and can sometimes lead to hurtful consequences for the person who is the victim of it and for the person is guilty of stereotyping someone. I decided to do my analysis of this short story using the historical context element because of the long history of problems between the Black and White races in this country according to our history books, including one terrible incident that just happened one week ago when nine innocent Black people were murdered in a church in Charleston South Carolina by a 21 year old White racist who was guilty of stereotyping and hating Black people. The killer accused Black men of raping White women and that Black people were taking over the whole country. These were stereotypes that he first thought about in his head that then led to his terrible actions.
According to Lia Parisyan of Literature Analysis, “a turning point of the Civil Rights struggle came when a woman named Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of a bus.” The use of a bus as a setting alludes to one of the key points of the historical context. According to Enotes.com , the bus “[allows] …passengers to reveal their various social prejudices.” Even Julian, who “[is] free of prejudice” is not immune: “he [has tried] to strike up an acquaintance on the bus with some of the better types.” By doing so, the author shows that there was still underlying tension in society despite the desegregation.
Although Charles Cullen was the serial killer, the hospitals where Cullen worked were also at fault. In 60 minutes, the interviewer stated that Charles Cullen was a suspect long before his arrest. “Charles Cullen was the main suspect for poisoning random bags of saline…if you talk to the investigators there they’ll tell you Cullen was our man, we knew he was dirty. It’s been 53 years since President Lyndon Johnson enforced the Civils Rights Act of 1964, but racism is still an ongoing issue to this day, whether it’s intentionally or inadvertently caused by the people in our society. Cornelius Eady evaluates the concept of racism through his poem, “The Cab Driver Who Ripped Me Off,” which focuses on the views of a prejudiced cab driver. Eady’s literary works focuses largely on the issue of racism within our society, centering on the trials that African Americans face in the United States. “The Cab Driver Who Ripped Me Off” from Autobiography of a Jukebox is an influential poem that successfully challenges the problems associated with racism, which is a touchy, yet prevalent problem that needs to be addressed.
Clint Smith, in his poem, Playground Elegy, perfectly exemplifies the leap from innocence to experience by questioning why his mother taught him that raising his hands is for excitement when sliding down a slide instead of for the police during a stop to avoid brutality. To begin, Smith takes a few stanzas to reminisce on a childhood memory, then provides a striking image of a child killed by latent racism. Next, he questions his mother’s intent in never teaching him about racism. Thus, Smith creates a complex association with the speaker's initially innocent memory by comparing sliding down a slide to a child dying on the streets to strengthen the importance of activism against racism. Smith begins the poem by recalling the speaker’s childhood memories.

In his short yet powerful poem, Cullen uses a single incident in which a young boy “riding through old Baltimore” (1) is singled out and called the N-word by another very small child, despite having done or said nothing to offend the boy. Although this incident is clearly hurtful, why is this incident in particular so important?
“Incident” by Natasha Tretheway brings to life the horrors African Americans faced during the time the Ku Klux Klan was rampant in the United States. Fear and secretiveness was an everyday part of African American lives. They were unable to live like white Americans were due to the racism they faced. This poem, however, symbolizes the idea that life continues through the fear of it crumbling. The narrator is still alive to tell his or her story; therefore, this is evidence that life continues.
“On the Subway,” written by Sharon Olds, is written from the perspective of what is presumed to be an upper class white woman, who finds herself on a subway with a lower class black boy. In “On the Subway”, Olds focuses on the controversial issue of racial conflict, and the theme of White v. Black. She does so by use of contrast between whites and blacks, by using harsh enjambments, powerful imagery, and by using the tone to convey the purpose. A major strategy used by Olds throughout the poem is contrast; in this case, the contrast between blacks and whites.
