Are there logical or emotional appeals that can affect a reader? Could it temporarily or maybe even permanently affect your personal opinion? In the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas G. Carr, there is a clear effect of multiple forms of appeals being used in his writing. The excellent use of tone, fiction, and multiple rhetorical devices make his article a well-written one. The author uses logos, mainly because he’s trying to appeal to a more logical and more intelligent audience. Throughout his writing he elaborates on how the internet had almost “dumbed us down” and has made our capability to sustain reading for long amounts of time impossible. There is numerous study cases and experiments used in throughout the article that are executed by colleges such as University College London or University of Michigan, that give the article a sense of legitimacy. Even if we have no clue what the article is about, the use of the names of the colleges let's us put trust into Carr’s writing.Carr uses logos as his main strategy of reasoning and influencing the reader’s opinion. When he talks about the specific experiments and theories that he has come across, we are more likely to believe him when he talks about the details. Since we know little about the topic our minds usually are influenced to believe the person who's talking about it if they sound legitimate, even if we have no clue who they are. The last of the three rhetorical strategies that Carr uses is pathos. Carr doesn't necessarily tap into our emotions, but he makes us feel like we can relate to him. He wants to connect to how we feel about ourselves by trying to make us feel what he does. He states how he “doesn't think how he used to think.” He wants to appeal to us by seeing if we feel the same way. The author's tone and interesting way of using rhetorical devices was what really made the article as good as it was. Carr gave off a very pensive and intimate tone throughout the whole article. The tone he uses makes his stories and his attempts to relate to the reader feel like he wants to be as personal as he could. The way he conveys his tone gives the article a different level of formality than most articles do. The diction of the author is also an important aspect that makes an article the way it is. The writer creates a distinctive and academic diction through the use multiple quotes from studies that agree with his point. One thing that goes hand and hand with tone are different types of rhetorical devices. A rhetorical and literary device that he uses right off the bat in his second paragraph is an anecdote. In fact, after the movie quote the next thing he says is “I can feel it,too” to start his next paragraph. When Carr says,” I'm not thinking the way I use to… naturally had become a struggle.” This quote emphasizes how he uses anecdotes to relate to something we all have struggled and gone through before.
