In “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Nicholas Carr writes about how he has a challenging time reading books that after a few pages he loses concentration and that his mind wanders to other things. The reading that use to come natural to him no longer does and he believes the internet is to blame, what once took a few hours searching through multiple books in the library for information now can be found in a few minutes searched on the internet. He also mentions other bloggers that confess how they either no longer read books or do not read articles that are longer than a few paragraphs or that they just skim articles on the internet. In the article Carr tries to explain what he means by using a scene from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey where HAL (the supercomputer) is being Disassembled but the man the machine nearly killed. Carr focuses his attention on the fact that the computer is starting to ‘feel’ its “brain” being taken away as the man takes his memory circuits. Nicholas then goes in to set this place into his theory to the reader.

He explains how not only does the media just supply the information to the users, it also morphs the thoughts that flow in people’s minds. In the essay, “Is Google Making Us Stupid” by Nicholas Carr, he mentioned that the technology is decreasing our abilities and increasing our dependence on sources such as internet. Carr describes how the internet is affecting the human brain and changing our minds. He explained that the internet is affecting the way that people receive and store information. Carr’s main idea is that extensive computer use is changing the human mind, mostly in negative ways because spending too much time on the internet can cause people to become lazy. He thought that the internet is turning us into scattered and superficial thinkers.

Carr states that in 1882, a man with failing vision bought a typewriter, and in using this device his style of communication changed dramatically. Carr is correct that technology is changing the way we as humans process information and communicate our messages, but the Internet is just the natural next stage in this development. All communication starts a message, but a message requires some form of a language, be it through voice, hand signals, pictures, electronic transmission, or writing. Throughout history communication has changed with the advent of new technologies as mankind continues to develop new ways to send more complex messages farther, faster, and more efficiently, while a message can now be anything from a simple greeting to the complete Wikipedia database or beyond.

I both agree and disagree with Carr's statements and point of view. I agree with the author that the internet clashed our concentration, but i disagree that its making us stupid. What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brain,” by Nicholas Carr, Carr discusses that people who use the web appear to struggle and have to challenge themselves twice as much to stay focused on long pieces of writing. In the reading, Carr says that he has a major problem being focused on a long text. He realized how the internet had detrimental effects on our brains and conflicted with our reading concentration. He mentions that reading a full text is almost impossible because our concentration drifts away.
