“Over the past few years I’ve had an uncomfortable sense that someone, or something, has been tinkering with my brain, remapping the neural circuitry, reprogramming the memory…” or so Nicholas Carr feels. Could you imagine a Dawn of artificial intelligence? A new world where the human mind was replaced with technology. There is an article that Carr wrote, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” where he describes, in great detail, the fact that he feels the internet is changing our minds and revolutionizing the way we think; but is that such a bad thing? He knows something is wrong; that what his brain was once able to do, it no longer possesses the ability. One of his pieces of evidence for this statement is his example of reading. He feels that previously, he was able to read lengthy articles and books without hesitation; maybe even a little pleasure. Now, however, he finds it difficult to concentrate on lengthy, deep reading. From the opening sentence, I was shutting my brain off from his article because I disagreed with him. However, the more I read, the more it started to make sense. The irony is, I had a hard time finishing this article. My mind kept wandering and I wanted to be doing something else. The moment I noticed this, I realize that there was truth in what he was saying! A few years ago I was a person who loved and sought after knowledge. I would read anything I could get my hands on. I would spend endless hours researching the most random things. However, recently, I have been struggling reading the most basic articles, if they are lengthy. I was horrified to make this discovery!
