The “it” in this short story is his hope, because he hopes that he will be a telephone operator, hopes that his mother will walk in with him on his first day of his new school, and he hopes that he won’t get in trouble with his parents.This shows that his hope is lost throughout the short story. To begin with, his parents have always had high hopes that their son will become a telephone operator.
