In the short story “It’s That It Hurts” by Tomas Rivera, a boy gets expelled. The “it” in this short story is his hope, because he hopes that he will be a telephone operator, hopes that his mother will walk in with him on his first day of his new school, and he hopes that he won’t get in trouble with his parents. This shows that his hope is lost throughout the short story. To begin with, his parents have always had high hopes that their son will become a telephone operator. When he gets expelled he starts thinking that he won’t be a success to his parents, because he won’t graduate and succeed in his dream job.
In the book, The Worst Hard Times, author Timothy Egan explains the hard times that the families in the high plains experienced during the years near the Great Depression. Egan writes about "The Great American Dust Bowl" which originally was a place of lushes thick grass where the bison could graze and where the Indians in the area could hunt, until Texas cowboys took over the land for big cattle drives making the area a huge ranch. During the years that these cowboys worked the land, they noticed that before they started the cattle runs, the grass that was in the area kept the top soil in place on times of drought. Now that the cattle had been grazing and the cowboys had been working the area, the grass was not prospering creating huge dust storms when the wind blew and there was no rain or plants to keep it down. The dust storms posed a worry to the ranch owners that they would lose cattle and therefore lose profit that they decided to divide up and sell the world's biggest cattle
From the reading, I understand that in today’s culture that there are still race relations. Even though both groups of boys came from the same educational background and the same impoverished living conditions. I believe his study and findings are still prevalent in today’s society. In this essay, I will be breaking down the parts and discussing social conditions, poverty, self-esteem and motivation between two “groups’’, the Hallway Hangers and the Brothers.
In the story “Seventh Grade,” Victor, the main character, learned that he should not deceive people to acquire through his embarrassing moments. This occurred when the protagonist stated, “La me vave me con le grandma” (Soto). Even though Victor tried to impress Teresa by sounding Frenchy, his teacher’s reaction made he realized that his attempt to impress Teresa was a total failure when he noticed his teacher’s expression. Consequently, Victor felt extremely bitter and quietly swallowed his humble pie. Another example of this occurrence when the author noted on section twenty-four, “Teresa,” Victor (responded) instantly (to the teacher).

In the story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst the narrator’s pride ruled over his actions and decisions. The narrator’s pride lead to the death of his little brother, Doodle.
For a while, he thought that this was the best time of his life because he was not going through the pain of being bullied. Then he noticed that the kids were not noticing his existence at all. At 17 years old, he learned a lesson. That lesson is that rejection is not our greatest fear. our greatest fear is to be invisible.
This is a story where the narrator and Doodle about the life he and Doodle had. Throughout the story, the narrator feels too prideful and too ashamed to realize how cruel he treated Doodle. In the beginning of the story,the narrator gets overwhelmed by pride and how ashamed he feels of Doodle being crippled. For example, when everybody sees Doodle walking, the narrator sees how “that pride” made him a slave for teaching Doodle how to walk.

The Positive and Negative Effects of Pride In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst pride has both positive and negative effects on the characters. The narrator of the story had taught his younger brother, Doodle, to walk. He was very prideful about the fact that was able to teach his brother how to walk. The pride he felt was positive because it led to his brother learning to walk.
Special treatment due to a physical or mental challenge reveals the strength and true character inside, When a challenge, or adversity comes up, a good character is usually revealed, although in some cases a person isn’t caring or selfless inside. Adversity can cause the bad inside someone to come out. In “The Scarlet Ibis,” the narrator teaches his physically disabled brother to walk. “Once I succeeded in teaching Doodle I began to believe in my own infallibility, and I prepared a terrific development program for him, unknown to Mama and Daddy of course” (Scarlet Ibis, Hurst). After succeeding he keeps trying to get Doodle to be more like everyone else.
Brother now sees the horrible effect pride has had changed his life. In this story Brother has learned that pride has covered his love. He has also learned that Doodle has loved him and if they would have loved each other equally that maybe Doodle could have died differently. This story is a life lesson. Though throughout his whole life he has been treated differently because he is in fact different. He is taller, stronger, smarter, etc. Even though they have always held him back he still wished to fit in. Now he has just found out that the society in which he always wished to fit into, is not what he has always thought it to be. That the society in which he was raised is wrong.
It is the reason the world possesses beauty and the reason it possesses evil. Regardless of one’s personal perception of pride, I believe it is an important topic to explore through literature, current events, and through aspects of our own daily lives. Pride is recurring theme in the aforementioned story, “The Scarlet Ibis.” In the story, the narrator seeks to train his handicapped brother, Doodle, to play like a regular, unafflicted boy.
