Author Rebecca Moore comes with a different perspective about Jonestown. Moore, had two sisters who were both involved with The Peoples Temple. She also had a four –year - old nephew who was the child of her oldest sister and his father was Jim Jones, leader of The Peoples Temple. Moore, states that writing this book is a personal quest to find answers of what happened to her family members. She knew many people who were members of The Peoples Temple and did not consider them to be crazy or a cultist. Through her research she was able to use the information to heal and reconcile her lost of her sisters and nephew. Moore chronicles the history of The Peoples Temple from starting in Indiana. She starts with the creation of The Peoples Temple being an interracial church in the 1950’s. In the 1950’s an interracial church challenged the establishment of white America. Moore describes Jones as “charismatic, but deranged, prophet…” Who believed in racial equality and shared wealth among members. The group moved to Northern California in the 1960’s and expanded to the Los Angeles area. In 1977 Jones relocated the small nation of Guyana where in 1978 the largest mass suicide in modern history would take place in Jonestown. She does cover all the factual information but then leads the reader to her opinions about cults, religion and the media coverage of Jonestown.
