The Elf Brief
It is only June but I feel Christmas in the air by the time I finished this book. The Elf Brief is the first installment to the planned ennealogy of the Magi Charter by Jordan David. I think he succeeded in establishing the grounds of his fictive universe.
This light and entertaining fantasy transports readers to the North Pole through the story of a young elfin lad, Noel Night, one of the thousands of Christmassy-named elves. The story started in a room fraught with books covering a wide range of topics where Noel’s sleep was stopped by the din of his alarm, something typical in the mornings of our elf protagonist who works as a staff in North Pole’s List department. His day and life changed quite dramatically that day because, on the night before, he just received a call to attend a meeting with Santa himself. Noel Night is a character with a curious nature and Santa’s instruction starts him to ask questions. This is a story of a corporate underling who gets promoted for a special project by his ultimate supervisor set in a Santa Claus reality.

This story does not center on toys, cute elves, and a gleeful boisterous Santa. David smartly expounds on the popular notion of Santa Claus, his elves, and the North Pole; craftily exploring North Pole’s corporate inner workings, its social and political cliques and structures as well as hinting its mysteries. As I read this book, I am aware of the many intrigues being discovered by Noel. I myself venture into questions of ethical nature with regards to the elfin workers at this fictive North Pole. Moreover, there is the blatant mystery of a Magi that the series name alludes to. Certain parts do feel like plot holes to me, but I hope they are just mysteries to be revealed through its sequels which I look forward to
