Andre Dubus’s “Killings” travels through the emotions of a couple after their son, Frank, is murdered. It explores the dark side of the people. Matt is a warmhearted and dedicating father. He is the main character of the story. Matt always takes his role as guardian of his children and wife very seriously. He is the father of Frank. When Frank dies, Matt is devastated. Every day he feels pressure to respond to his son’s dead. The devil took over him. Matt killed Richard. Richard was the murderer of his son. Not only was Matt upset with the murder of Frank, but he was also upset with the fact that the killer was granted a bail. Matt was dying of pain. He is very close and devoted to his wife. Richard had no scruples. “Strout came in the front door and shoot Frank twice in the chest and once in the face with a 9 mm automatic. Then he looked at the boys and Mary Ann, and went home to wait for the police (94-97)”. Richard loved Mary Ann. He was obsessed with winning her back. She did not feel comfortable with Frank’s relationship with Mary Ann. She thought Mary was too old for his son. Also she was not divorced yet and she had two kids. After Richard killed Frank, she wanted him dead. This is evident from the beginning of the story. Ruth’s arm, linked with Matt’s tightened when her older son, Steve, says he should kill Richard. She is a manipulative, mean woman. She pushed Matt towards killing Richard. “When Ruth said good night she looked at his face, and he felt she could see in his eyes the gun (107-108)”. At the end she asks Matt “Did you do it?”(150).She totally knew what Matt was getting into and did not try to stop him, not even once. The intense emotion required to kill Richard is through her. Mary Ann is the mother of two boys. She is in process of divorce and dating Frank. She was mainly the reason of Frank’s death. Her crazy husband killed him out of jealousy.
