Last Child In The Woods When reading Last Child In the Woods by Richard Louv, it came to my attention of the importance of child spending some amount of time outside. As technology and crime has increased, it has made time children spend outside to be much less than it should be. Now, children’s outside time is through constructive activities that doesn’t allow them to have the freedom of exploration and creativity. When reading this book, as a teacher I would like to encourage students to go outside and explore, but also to create lessons that can help support students to explore nature. For example, when students are outside for recess or playing a sport such as football, their brains aren’t functioning the same as if they were just outside exploring. It describes how students need to be active in games outside, but they also need an hour to have free play to explore and be creative. Before reading Last Child In The Woods, I never established the different emotional and physical components that nature had to children. For example, depression and attention deficit disorder. I understood the connection between obesity in children not being outside, but the emotionally component stood out to me. With constant studied being done, some being useful, some being not. I was surprised that there was very few studied done about the effects natures have on children and adults. Through not much research, I interpreted it as a reason for society not making it a majoring priority like healthy eating or daily exercise. When I first started reading, I wondered how this idea of children in being in nature would apply to children who grow up in cities such as New York. But when the author described of backyard as being a way for children to explore nature, I was extremely surprised.
