The book "The Parrot In The Oven" whriten by victor martinez tells a story about a fourteen year old named Manny. Manny is a “young man” living at home with his parents and siblings in Fresno, California. him and his faimily are not wealthy but not too poor. the book teaches you that coming of age takes many experiences and issues to help an young man learn and grow. while reading this book you can relate to the problems that Manny has to face.
During slavery, African Americans were treated as possessions in the same way that livestock were regarded as possessions. The hog symbolizes the awful, dehumanizing thinking behind slavery. In Jefferson’s trial, his defense attorney refers to him as a hog, “Gentlemen of jury...put a hog in the electric chair” (Gaines 15-16). A hog symbolizes how the whites in the community treated the blacks and how they think about them socially. A hog is a filthy animal, which in the time period of the 1940’s is how most whites viewed blacks, and believed that blacks were good for nothing but to work for the whites.
In the novel The Omnivore's Dilemma, author Micheal Pollan talks extensively about corn. He discusses the ecological, economical, and biological effects it has on humans and our environments. Most often, he brings up the shocking statistic that twenty-five percent of all supermarket items contain corn. Pollan steers away from taking a stance on this, but the strong voice in his writing shows the reader how he feels about corn's prevalence. He, rather obviously, thinks of it as a problem.
One of the most important aspects of “grit lit” is the violence that occurs in almost every novel. The violence that reoccurs throughout all of the “grit lit” novels allows for a more exciting plot and character conflict throughout the novel. One of the most influential and famous southern writers is Harry Crews. Crews is responsible for many different novels, short stories, and autobiographies, and almost all of his works include some type of violence. The main reason for violence in southern literature is due to the unordinary, low-life characters that the author includes to allow for a violent plot.
Carnivals come around when the weather begins to warm up, but in Something Wicked This Way Comes, by Ray Bradbury, the carnival comes earlier than usual. With the carnivals appearance in fall, characters Jim Nightshade and Will Halloway are left curious with the intentions of the carnival. A story written by Bradbury leaves readers emotionally connected with the boys who risk their lives due to curiosity and temptation. Bradbury focuses on ordinary characters like Jim Nightshade and Will Halloway and what death is to the characters throughout the story. In Something Wicked This Way Comes, Ray Bradbury, explores temptations of characters who are unsatisfied with their lives.

The Lord Of The Flies by William Golding is a book about a plane full of boys crashing on an island. The boys are by themselves no adults so they have to survive on their own and establish their own government. Piggy is one of the first characters we meet as a boy with poor eyesight, a weight problem and asthma so the readers already like him even if no one else likes him. Piggy is the closest thing the boys have to an adult on the island. Throughout the story Piggy embraces the character traits of being intellectually intelligent, Mature and loyal.
Literature Overview By reading aloud and exposing students to cultural literacy, it allow students to gain new perspective from different cultures. This lesson requires five cultural diverse books that are central themed with the well-known Cinderella story. By examining these books, I hope that students will appreciate the cultures from Mexico, China, India, Persia, and Hmong. In addition, these books are fictional cultural diverse books that are fairy tales which will engage students to comprehend a story with a central theme, yet see how they can have different points on view influenced by culture, likewise these books mirror on comparisons and differences.
The novel takes place on an abandoned island where a bunch of children and teenagers get stranded. They are forced to fend for themselves and through a series of unforeseen events, it turns most of them into barbaric savages who have no disregard for others. Piggy was used as a scapegoat by the antagonist, Jack to secure power. He tormented Piggy at every opportunity he gets to prove his dominance. Similarly, the Transgender society is often different from most, the majority of them has most likely been ridiculed due to how they portrayed themselves in public.
As children grow up, they tend to forget the stories that once made up their lives and look down upon what they deem as “child’s play”; however, these stories raise children where parents are not present. Fairy tales characters for children are the construction workers of the adult world, and as the children mature into adulthood, the gates of imagination are opened and the storybook characters morph into newspaper headlines; suddenly, the clock strikes twelve and the glitz and glamour disappear as the realization that “human nature is not innately good, that conflict is real [and] life is harsh before it is happy” (Tatar 306) sinks in. In the book Of Beetles and Angels, by Mawi Asgedom, a sudanese refugee family immigrates to America, seeking new life. The value of reading Of Beetles and Angels is that it shows that you can become something from nothing in the hardest situations. It shows the value of setting goals, working hard, and being kind to others. In OBAA, Mawi shows the value of setting goals and persisting to get them.
In addition, her mother spent the night patrolling their home with a German luger to protect the family from the terror they faced from their white neighbors (Hansberry 1215). The Younger’s were moving to a new home, which was something to be celebrated. Yet, by doing this they were risking their lives. Thus, the happy ending that they believed they had was about to come to an abrupt ending.
Mark Twain was a prominent humorous American writer in the late 19th century who was infamous for satirizing many elements of society and writing in a vernacular that most people could understand. He believes that humor is “strictly a work of art” and that it is much subtler than comedy which “shouts [the nub] at you … every time” (Source A). Using his sense of humor, Mark Twain writes “Cannibalism in the Cars” and uses repetition and irony to achieve a humorous effect. Throughout the whole story, Twain uses repetition through anaphora and alliteration which creates suspense by emphasizing certain parts of his story to make the end seem more humorous.
According to Mark Twain, humorous stories are very different from comic and witty stories. Humor adds amusement and interest in the message that is being delivered. “Cannibalism in the Cars” delivers the humorous message by using irony, satire, and syntax. The irony in the short story is in the way that the senators speak so sophisticated.
The land of stories: the wishing spell, the first of the Land of Stories series by Chris Colfer is a beautiful story for children of any age to rediscover the magic of the fairytale world. The story begins when 12-year-old twins, Alex and Conner Bailey receive a storybook from their grandmother. When the book starts shaking and glowing in the middle of the night, the inquisitive Alex begins to investigate the strange phenomenon, when she loses her balance and falls into the book, to which her frightened brother follows. They find themselves lost in the fairytale world; only their stories have moved on without the rest of the world.
