Life as We Knew It Essay The book I chose was “Life as We Knew It” by Susan Beth Pfeffer. This book is fiction, but more specifically, science fiction. It is science fiction because the story is about the effect the moon has on Earth when it is knocked closer to the Earth by and asteroid, which is related to astronomy. The story takes place in a small town in Pennsylvania. It takes place in modern day timing, since there are no carriages or anything like that from the past, but it does not have advanced technology like the future. The major character in the story is Miranda Evans. She is 16 years old at the beginning and middle of the story. At the very end, it is Miranda’s birthday and she turns 17. Wayne, Peter Elliot, Dan, Sammi, Becky, Grandma, Hal, and Lisa. Megan Wayne is one of Miranda’s closest friends. Before the collision, they both would hang out together. Meghan becomes very religious and fasts very often, resulting in dying of starvation. Mrs. Wayne, Meghan’s mother was like a mom to Miranda. After Meghan dies, she hangs herself. Peter Elliot is Miranda’s mother’s boyfriend (Miranda’s mother’s name is Laura Evans.). He is a local doctor, and frequently visits their house with new information on illnesses and sicknesses spreading in the area. He also brings a lot of treats for the family, and is invited to stay over for dinner very often. Unfortunately, he dies near the end of the book due to the flu. Dan is a member of Miranda’s swim team and as a short relationship with her until his parents decide to move west in search of better conditions. Sammi, another one of Miranda’s closest friends, is known for “dating all kinds of guys”. She moves with her 40-yr-old boyfriend to Tennessee in hopes that things are better there. Becky was a close friend to Miranda, Sammi, and Meghan. At the beginning of the book, she dies of an illness. After her death, the trio starts going their separate ways. Becky often appears in Miranda’s dreams, guarding things that Miranda wants most at that time. Miranda’s grandma lives in Las Vegas. One day when Miranda was at school, there was a thunderstorm. A bolt of lightning came and hit one of the trees on the school grounds. They lost electricity, and it became really windy. After a couple minutes, Miranda’s teacher realized that it was a tornado, and they all went down to the hallway. The climax of the story is when there are a lot of sicknesses and diseases being passed around, and the hospitals are crowded with sick people. People are dying quickly because there aren’t enough doctors to care for every sick person. Also, the local stores are running very low on food, and some people were being starved since they ran out of food. The conflict in the story is that everyone in the story is dying because of the bad weather and conditions the moon’s collision
