Introduction The book that I selected is called “Getting Life” by Michael Morton, who is a man that was wrongfully convicted of killing his wife in Texas in 1986. This book takes us from a happy young couple to the day of the murder, through the investigation into his wife’s murder, Michael’s trial and conviction, 25 years in prison, appeals, release from prison, and reintegration into society. One unique fact about this case is that is the first case where the prosecutor in a wrongful conviction case was subsequently convicted of prosecutorial misconduct, stripped of their law license and sentenced to serve time in jail.
All But My Life is a memoir written by Gerda Weissmann Klein. This memoir tells about her experiences during World War Two. Her childhood was full of happiness growing up with her Jewish family. This memoir starts two days after the Nazi invasion of Poland.
For my book talk, I read a realistic fiction novel called Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. Miranda Evans lives with her family in Pennsylvania. She attends eleventh grade at her high school, and is also a part of her local swimming team. Her life is normal until the moon is knocked closer to the earth by a meteorite. The coastlines are under water and the weather is abnormally cold.
Maturing in life. At the beginning of life, people are innocent, with life not having a chance to tamper and corrupt them. At the end of life, they 've known loss and heartbreak and life has messed them up. But imagine if people were born all knowing and died as innocent as a baby.
Both The Odyssey and Cold Mountain parallel each other in many things such as character, plot, and theme. An instance of this analogous relationship are the characters Junior and Polyphemus. Junior and Polyphemus embody inhospitality, demonstrate brutality through cannibalism, and leave their respective victims with lasting troubles. Junior and Polyphemus are the epitome of inhospitality within their respective books. Junior displays his unwelcoming nature by inviting Inman to come to his house after he helps Junior remove his bull from a river, only to repay Inman by selling him out to the Home Guard for “five dollars a head for every outlier [turned over].”
Women are the society’s backbone In A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines, three women take care of not only themselves but others. These three women are Tante Lou, Miss Emma and Vivian. Tante Lou is the woman who raises Grant when his mother ran off. Miss Emma is Jefferson’s godmother and she cares for him a lot.
Within the past couple of decades, criminologists have developed different criminological theories that apply to the social behaviors and decisions of criminals. One of the earliest theories developed regarding criminality is the rational choice theory, in which describes the rationalization of determining if the rewards from committing the crime outweigh the consequences. In Scarver’s case, his decision to engage in criminal activities outweighed the potential consequences, or the other alternatives if he did not engage in such criminal activities. In addition to the rational choice theory, Scarver’s criminality can be related to the social disorganization theory, which describes the influence of one’s social and physical environment on one’s decision to commit a crime. Lastly, the strain theory can be related to Scarver’s criminality as well, as it is used to describe an individual who lacks the means to obtain such goals, and aspirations, so therefore, he or she engages in criminal activities to acquire the goals.
“We can’t heal the world today but we can begin with a voice of compassion, a heart of love, and an act of kindness.” This quote by Mary Davis encapsulates the essence of Gaines’ lesson on humanity in “A Lesson Before Dying,” emphasizing the crucial role of embracing each other with love and support to cultivate an improved society that is united. In the face of Jefferson’s oppressive circumstances and impending death sentence, Grant’s community urges him to guide Jefferson towards manhood, after Jefferson was called a hog, a responsibility initially resisted. I. INTRODUCTION Life Course Theory (LCT) is an approach to public health which draws from a large variety of disciplines, such as biology, sociology, and psychology, in order to examine how health and disease develop over the course of a lifetime (1). This lens is used to examine health disparities, examine factors which contribute to the achievement of optimal health, and develop interventions. The goal of life course-based intervention goes beyond the prevention of disease and seeks to create conditions in which people are able to thrive, or achieve their full potential for health and wellness, throughout their entire lives (2, 3). Life course perspective is used in social science to help understand human development. It takes into account how a person grows and changes through life experiences. It looks at historical events as well as cultural changes that affect a person’ evolution over their life (The life course perspective, 2003-2018). Life course perspective states that there is complex interaction of social and environmental factors mixed with biological, behavioral, and physiological issues that define the course of a person’s life. Each stage in life exerts influences on the next stage, social, economic, and physical environments and they also have influences through a person’s life course.
For example, if a hardened criminal (that is in prison for armed robbery) stole money in order to provide for his family (a sense of responsibility), then that criminal does not possess antisocial personality disorder. Towards the end of The Old Man and the Sea, when Santiago returns home, he is very upset about losing the Marlin. He began to realize that he was going to be defeated after he lost his harpoon and he saw more sharks coming. Then when he finally gets back to the shore; all he had was the skeleton of the marlin that he took four days to catch and bring back.
Developmental theories look at how offenders start and end their criminal behaviors. All developmental theories, including the two focused on in this paper, pull from social, psychological, and biological factors to find answers. Both of these theories follow along a trajectory or pathway for offenders. Sampson and Laub’s age-graded theory has offenders following along two possible trajectories. They can either follow along the high risk trajectory or the low risk trajectory.
It may be that the disorder was influenced by either nature or nurture, or both could influence it. The debate about whether a person is born a criminal could go in a lot of different directions. One could say that a person is a criminal because of their nature and what their parents passed down to them or another could say that only a person’s nurture influenced them to do things that made them a criminal. What most people say is that a person does things that make them a criminal because of both their nature and their nurture. They do things based off of what they got from their parents as well as what environmental factors influence
