Celeste Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere takes place in Shaker Heights, Ohio. The author, Celeste Ng, grew up in Shaker Heights and her inspiration for writing Little Fires Everywhere was that she misses the uniqueness and unusualness of the community. It portrays several characters: Elena Richardson, Lexie Richardson, Trip Richardson, Moody Richardson, Izzy Richardson, Mia Wright, and Pearl Wright, who all struggle with conflict and life as teenagers and adults. Lexie Richardson is no different as she undergoes her struggles and challenges and reevaluates the morals and ethics she grew up with. However, in this quotation, Lexie asks for Mia’s opinion about her, thus demonstrating that Lexie has changed after getting the abortion, reevaluating her morals and ethics even further. In summary, after Lexie faces her first real challenge in life—her abortion— she begins to change her perspectives in life, reevaluating her morals and ethics, causing her ability to empathise, rather than criticise, others to become more fully developed.
