In the book, The Other Wes Moore, there are two men having same named Wes Moore. They were born blocks apart within a year of each other. Both grew up fatherless in Baltimore neighborhoods and had difficult childhoods. “Author Wes is an American author, social entrepreneur, producer, political analyst, and decorated US Army officer. He is the author of The Other Wes Moore and The Work, both of which are New York Times Bestsellers.
In Anne Tyler’s short story, Teenage Wasteland, a teenage boy named Donny struggles in school. His teachers and family feel they try everything they can, even hiring a tutor, but within a year Donny simply disappears. Daisy, his mother, tries to find a scapegoat for her son’s downfall, but ends up placing most of the blame on herself. While Daisy certainly played a role in her son’s demise, not one single character is to blame for Donny’s eventual disappearance – they all played a part.
The book by Jeannette Walls, The Glass Castle, tells about the hardships that Jeannette went through for the first part of her life. Jeannette’s father was unable to hold a steady job and this forced her family to move very often. Jeannette lived in many places and was often homeless as a child. While moving to those places, most specifically in West Virginia, Jeannette faced the problem of trying to make new friends while also being bullied. She also had the struggle of not knowing where her life would take her next or if they would stay in one place forever.
The Glass Castle: Jeannette Walls- Responsibility Haileigh Williams Upon reading The Glass Castle, written by Jeannette Walls, the reader will quickly notice all of the responsibilities Jeannette; the author and narrator of the novel, takes on throughout her life. The book itself is a memoir of Jeannette’s life that takes place from 1963 to 2005 and takes the reader through the ups and downs of Jeannette’s life in poverty and somewhat neglect. While reading the novel, the reader will be shown situations where they will be shocked and heartbroken. Jeannette’s family isn’t the average family from the south.
Vivian Key is four years old and halfway through scarfing down a bowl of applesauce when her mother says, “Vivvy, don’t play with your food.” Vivian pauses in the middle of waving her (unused) spoon around like a wand and pouts. “Why?” she asks, scooping up another glob of applesauce with her fingers. “I’m a fairy.”

ANALYSIS Jeannette Walls, uses the rhetorical strategies of narration, description and lastly process analysis, to illustrate the idea of independence and her appreciation for the unconventional dysfunctionality of her family. Personally, my understanding of the authors take- home-idea, was how the dysfunctionality she was raised in, fostered the unconventional behavior she exuded as a child. To help with the introduction of the author take home idea of independence, she uses the rhetorical strategy of narration.
One Child written by Torey Hayden and published in 1980 is about a six-year-old girl named Sheila, who was put into Hayden’s special education class when there was no spots open at the hospital where Sheila was initially supposed to be kept. From the 5 months Sheila spent with Hayden, she started out as a silent and uncontrollable but then blossomed into an extremely intelligent young girl. At the beginning of the book, Hayden discovered that a 6 year old girl kidnapped a three-year-old boy and attempted to burn him. The young boy was found before passing away. To her surprise, the girl that was guilty of the burning was sent to Hayden’s class until there was an opening at the state hospital.
Whenever Maddie’s mother goes out, she doesn’t come home and it causes Maddie to worry. As she searches the town in the middle of the night, she still can’t find her, so she just decides to go home. Upon walking in the door,”My eyes were adjusted to the darkness by then and I could see Ma’s sleeping form on the linoleum floor. I felt a sudden and unexpected surge of anger. I was so sick of all this that I wanted to scream.

The following journal is over the short story “St. Lucy’s Homes for Girls Raised by Wolves” written by Karen Russell. There is a strong pack of 15 wolf- girls, who are sent to St. Lucy’s. They are sent by their parents because they are convinced by the nun’s that they are sending their children to have a better life. They are told that the wolf- girls will be made into naturalized citizens of human society. In the process of doing so, the wolf- girls are having to adjust to a new environment.
In the short story “American History” written by judith ortiz Cofer, the author writes about a young girl Elena who lives in a building called El building who feels very out of place and is very quiet. She meets a boy named Eugene who lives rather close to her, she keeps an eye out in school to see if they have any classes until she realizes he is in all honors classes. On that day president JFK was shot and killed, sending all the kids home. Elena having mixed emotions, she remembers that her and Eugene are going to study, when she arrives Eugene’s mother does not want her to study with her son. Elena goes home thinking of the green door of his house.
Lynda Barry in her work The Sanctuary of School, wrote about her life as a kid with a toxic family life where she relied on school to be a place she feels secure. She tried to escape from her toxic family by going to school; was the only way for her to relieve her mind. The school granted her freedom to draw and provided her a safe place to stay. Painting and drawing was the only activity that made her happy. By doing these activities were the only way to express herself.
The text appeals to the readers for both of the examples through emotion (pathos) by describing the conditions that the students learn in and it shows how the administration doesn’t care about the well-being of the students. Mireya discusses Fremont’s academic and sanitary problems and in the court papers it states, “Some of the classrooms ’do not have air-conditioning,’ so that students ‘become red-faced and unable to concentrate’ during ‘the extreme heat of summer.’ The rats observed by children in their elementary schools proliferate at Fremont High as well. ‘Rats in eleven . . . classrooms,’ maintenance records of the school report “(Kozol 708).
