In MC Lyte’s song “Dear John” featuring Common she talks about the importance of being a caring father to your children. The song suggests that some individuals may be coerced into a life of crime by the allure of luxury and respect. In “Dear John” the song's hook says “So you wanna be ballers, shot callers. Dippin' in the Benz straight lawless. Or would you rather be fathers to your daughters?” This questions the importance of living a selfish rather than being there for your children. This quote also suggests that you must choose between the life of a baller and a father because you can’t truly be there for your child unless you are committed to raising them as a good role model.
