The article mainly is about Malcolm who went to prison in the Charlestown prison for burglary there he knew how to use time and tired of not being understood by others who read his letters he began using a dictionary to study and learn some words , putting a lot of effort reading back to himself to have a better understanding of new words that he don’t even knew exist each day he wrote a new word of the dictionary his goal was to learn how the read using the dictionary as his best tool . This shows, as described by the cited work, what a man pushed by his negative interactions with the oppressive white men is willing to do to find his identity (i.e. through hustling).

This 207-pages book was published by Bedford/St. Martin’s in Boston, New York on February 20, 2004. David Howard-Pitney worked at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers Project at Stanford University in 1986, and that made him a specialist on American civil religion and African-American leaders ' thought and rhetoric (208). Another publication of Howard-Pitney is The African-American Jeremiad: Appeals for Justice in America.
By becoming a scholar one is provided with a plethora of more opportunities and they will not be that thwarted individual who, when they read, felt as if the words were all in Chinese. In this excerpt Malcolm X also seeks to arouse a sense of relatability within his audience. During the late 1900s, the United States was riddled with racism. Malcolm X (1956) recalls an experience that he had in 7th grade United States history class in which the teacher had made a quip regarding Negroes and the classroom resounded with laughter. This allegory would connect to the apparent audience is because many of them have had similar experiences with blatant racism and he evokes a call to action.
It all began when he was sentenced to a term at Charlestown Prison. He met a man named Bimbi who was fader more educated than young Malcolm had ever been, which eventually led him to his determination in his prison studies and gain knowledge. This article is useful because it shows that to be good at something you have to have dedication and motivation. In “Prison Studies,” Malcolm X educates himself in the English language by being motivated to practice and practice. My second most useful source I have found is “I Just Wanna Be Average” by Mike Rose.
In Malcolm’s situation he wasn’t able to have the education he felt he needed and started to from prison. Once he felt he had enough education he then became interest in his culture and started to realize that history stories he had known of didn’t exactly happened as he had thought. According to Malcolm “The teachings of Mr. Muhammad stressed how history had been “whitened” --- when white men had written history books, the black man simply had been left out.” What he means by this quote is that from what he had read Mr. Muhammad opened his eyes to how white men have pushed African Americans to the side and not want to include them as part of history. Malcolm then realized just how badly American Americans have been treated not just during slavery but all throughout history.
As the years went by, Malcolm continued down the wrong path, filled with crime and pain. Due to the racial hate that followed him, he could never be seen as an equal. Though he is still seen as a controversial figure, I believe that Malcolm X was one of the most compassionate figures in history. He once said, “I believe in human beings, and that all human beings should be respected as such, regardless of their color.” I really admire how he fought for what he believed in. Initially, I learned about Malcolm X in my AP English Language class, but I was reintroduced to his influence on the modern day black society in my college history class. Prior to being reintroduced to his philosophy in my college history class, I thought that X was a violent, racist man.
The absence of words in his vocabulary struck him as his biggest setback and this led him to the conclusion that “the best thing I could do was get hold of a dictionary – to study, to learn some words.” Through the Norfolk Prison school Malcolm acquired a dictionary, along with some tablets and pencils. This started his personal quest to improve his penmanship and study words to gain literacy. He began by copying the first page of the dictionary word by word. He then read the words he had written in his own handwriting out loud over, and over.
In addition, he was jealous of Bimbi, who always over controlled the conversations. Therefore, Malcolm X put all of his effort into learning new words and their meaning in each section of the dictionary. By writing down the words on the tablet and read them back to himself after days, his vocabulary was broadened. As a result, he could read, understand what a book said, write his own words, and have interested in reading.
He first copies dictionary to build stronger vocabulary words and to improve his penmanship or handwriting because he wants to be able to write in a straight line and to learn the meaning of words he never knew existed. As a result, he copies the dictionary into his tablet page after page, read and reread his own handwriting. He finally copies the entire dictionary which helps him "to pick up handwriting speed"(172). Additionally, Malcolm begins to read and comprehend books on religion and history, which exposed him into a new different world. Malcolm X says "I never had been so truly free in my life"(173).
Introduction: Malcom X urges the Negro community to fight to gain the equal rights they deserve by taking action against their white oppressors. He emphasizes that blacks will gain their rights either thorough voting, with the ballot, or else through the inevitable violence with the bullet. What makes a leader? I believe a leader to be intelligent ,tough, and has the determination to achieve a goal. Having certain skills will have an impact on you being a trustable leader. Being selfless and caring are also characteristics. Malcolm X his birth name Malcolm Little is a fine a example of a leader and has most of these leadership qualities.
