Tamilyn Chang Mrs. Thomas August 31st, 2016 3 and 4 period In Gary Soto’s short story Seventh Grade, Victor embarrasses himself while trying to impress Teresa, the girl he likes. Like a boomerang, lies come back to strike us with the very force we used to throw them. In the short story, “The challenge” by Gary Soto, which is located in Fresno, California a new girl in the school called Estela takes Joses's attention and he tries to impress her and get to know her, and win her interest. In the story the protagonist, Jose learns that lies will never get you anywhere. In the beginning, Jose lies to impress his crush.
Former U.S. National Security Advisor, Colin Powell, once said, “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work”. Michael Jordan put in a great amount of effort and practice every day to become a famous basketball player. Tim Cook always worked harder than everyone else to become Apple’s CEO. Howard Schultz put in extra time and work to become the Starbucks CEO. Hard work and determination always lead to success.
Due to society, success is mostly viewed as a physical accomplishment. Ivan Chino, National Guard Soldier/NIU graduate, is not only a successful person because of his accomplishments, but more over his work ethic. When asked what makes a person successful, Chino replied, “The road with reaching success comes with many obstacles, but it also involves setting a new bar to achieve a higher form of success.” Clearly, Chino’s view of success is to constantly set high goals, despite the obstacles that come along with them. The reason being is to never settle and strive for a higher level.
In the essay “Hidden Intellectualism” by Gerald Graff he discusses the difference between “book smarts” and “street smarts” as they pertain to intellectualism (Tannen & Graff:2010 p.198). We are taught that being street smart means to have the knowledge to handle difficult or dangerous situations in life, and that being book smart means that you are well educated academically. Graff explains how schools and colleges may be at fault for not channeling such street smarts into academic work. We do not consider that one of the major reasons why colleges and schools overlook the intellectual potential of street smarts, is the fact we associate street smarts with anti-intellectual concerns. He proceeds to explain how students do not need to read challenging writings to become intellectual themselves.
My family taught me that hard work pays off in the right time. I never understood those words and I still trying to figure out what that phrase really means. Everyone works hard for some reason like family, dreams, and goals in life. My father is a hard working man, and he works for his family. Furthermore, in the short story of “Shout” made me remember about the first job that my dad got in the United States.
People have the idea that if you really do work hard
Hard work is essential, ultimately, helping us to

In life, everyone faces challenges at one point or another. Some people face challenges in school, sports, or at home. How you face those challenges is what sets you apart from all the others. Another person might think of success as making millions of dollars and having a huge house with nice cars this is also an achievable goal.
