The “Marigold” is written by Eugenia Collier. This short story about about a girl living in fear and an old shanty and rundown town. Her actions made her come of age and made her become the person that she is today. Eugenia Collier use of connotations, imagery and different types of literary elements portrayed Marigolds as people can’t live or have compassion or innocence. For example, “I remember the only dry september of the dirt roads and grassless yards of the shantytown where I lived.” This demonstrates that the narrator shows the living condition she lived in.
