Chapter Three Summary Slater introduces chapter three with telling us that David Rosenhan was greatly ill towards the end of his life. Slater later tells us that Rosenhan and eight of his friends fake they’re way into different mental hospitals just by saying “I’m hearing things”. In fact, Slater wanted to see how the psychiatrist can see the sane from insane. Later, Robert Spitzer gave Rosenhan rude criticism about his experiment.
Reading may seem like an run of the mill thing where you laugh at the funny jokes, glare into the abyss when the text possess a provocative quote. To Mike Bunn the author of “How to Read Like A Writer,” has a different interpretation of what reading should be. Mike Bunn emphasizes that reading should be more than just context, he argues that you need to question the authors’ choice of words, literary devices, sentence placement, in order to be able to become better readers and writers ourselfs. He presents it to the audience in a manner that is very interactive. He begins by explaining what he means to “Read Like a Writer”(Bunn, How to Read Like A Writer), followed by questions that should be asked about the text and writing style, and techniques that should be done to become a more proficient writer.

Discrimination definitely shaped Ehrenreich’s story. She had many advantages compared to others who actually live in this life style. One of her advantages was her race, another big advantage was not having any children. All these play a role in her story/ experience. Under the category of “Previewing the Text”, the author mentioned actions like skimming the text for a quick overview, noting boldfaced words, headings, and paying attention to incorporated lists. Whenever I am taking notes out of a textbook, especially out of a science textbook, I always perform these actions. For one, it allows for me to be comfortable with the material. However, these actions do not pertain to me just reading the text; rather, I can be an efficient author by incorporating these methods into my writing as well. If I were to ever author a piece of informational text, I would make sure to utilize the use of headings and boldfaced words, for they really stress the importance of both the overall text and some of the ideas found within
The way I prepared myself for this book was on every page I had at least about three sticky notes stating the important facts and at the end of the chapter I had a one sentence summary stating the main idea opic of that chapter. This method I have found out has helped me the most it helps me remember certain things better due to my short-term memory loss. For my writing method, I tend to make outlines so I don’t get off topic. Both of my reading and writing method I have discovered for myself throughout my school years has helped me learn better and just in generally better myself academic wise.
What Adler means by “marking up a book” is to be one of those persons that read the books completely and analyze their content deeper. Mark them up is like underlining with pencil or highlight the sentences that catch our attention.
