Victor Rios, author of Punished: Policing the Lives of Black and Latino Youths grew up in Oakland, California. During his childhood there he had an experience that made him return to Oakland to question and study the current issues that the youth’s their face. At the age of 14 he had joined a gang, he did this mostly for protection from other gangs and threats in the area, and during his time in the gang he met another kid named “smiley,” nicknamed because of his knack to smile during every situation, good or bad. Rios would become good friends with him, and even steal a car for him to use as a home at one point when he was kicked out of his own home. Although this would eventually lead to one of his first encounters with bad police officers, as he was severely beaten for what he had done.
Emily Muzi 10/29/15 G How Holden Treats Women Holden Caulfield has trouble connecting with everyone but when it comes to women, he views them as objects to admire or protect. He doesn’t feel that they’re smart, nor hold any depth of character. Although, he holds a very intense love for some such as his younger sister Phoebe or his childhood friend, Jane Gallagher. Holden seems to be attached to them and they’re the only people that Holden is psychologically connected to.
Accepting When You Are Wrong In Nick Flynn’s memoir, Another Bullshit Night In Suck City, the narrator, Nick, and his father, Jonathan have developed a negligent relationship among each other. Nick has many encounters with his father, where he could have approached him in order to reconnect the father son bond but he does not. However, Nick does feel that not only is his father lost but he is as well.
In the story, When a Southern Town Broke a Heart, Jacqueline Woodson uses a variety of symbolism and metaphor to show that when you get wiser, your perception of things change. One example of Woodson conveying this theme is when she writes, “When the deep green beauty revealed my place and time in history and laid claim to that moment all children know, when the tendrils of adulthood move toward us, showing themselves long before we are ready to see.” This quote describes when she realized the nostalgia of her home was masking the bitter and unfortunate side that “adulthood” is showing her. This directly relates to the theme because as she becomes wiser and more experienced, (the tendrils of adulthood) her perception changes. (showing themselves long before we are ready to see.)
An adjective that I would use to describe Virgil Byrnes would be abusive. In the book there are multiple different ways Virgil has hurt people. One the most cruelest ways Virgil has hurt people was when he burned his own daughter Sarah Byrnes. Sarah reveals this to Eric Calhoun when Sarah was still in the hospital. Sarah states “Then he said, ‘Here's your pretty little baby for you,’ and I look up and saw the wood stove coming right up to my face.
H.H Holmes confessed, “I was born with the devil in me. I could not help the fact that I was a murderer, no more than the poet can help the inspiration to sing”. During this time Holmes was growing to be America’s first recorded serial killer and taking place in the tail end of the Industrial Revolution, technology and architecture improved to new levels. Much like Holmes, life in the city was chaotic. Chicago at the time was moving to a more industrialized society.
A Deliberate Revenge At the end of the story “Bisclavret”, the werewolf punished his ex-wife brutally to punish her disloyalty. His revenge pushed the story to the climax, but what the story did not explain was how he planned for the revenge or if he even planned for it at all. The werewolf’s special identification as a mix of animal and man makes this problem confusing but interesting. By analyzing the story and applying theories like “The Prince” and “Homo Sacer”, this essay will draw the conclusion that his revenge was intended and planned out of human reason.

These days’ children are causing more harm than good in their communities, and it isn’t their fault. In the Time Magazine article, “Children without Pity” by Nancy Traver, Traver provides examples of corrupted children performing acts that healthy kids wouldn’t do. Their misguided past has affected their present causing them to react in violent behavior. For this reason, I believe that children should not be tried as adults. Kids have only seen and grown up around violence, so violence is what they result to.
Marriage is often much more complex than what people envision, as many factors play roles in ensuring it will last. In Zora Neale Hurston’s novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Hurston portrays the story of a young African-American girl named Janie whose Grandma marries her off to Logan Killicks, a man she does not love. Yearning for real love, Janie runs away and marries a promising rich man named Joe Starks, only to discover that there is once again a lack of affection. After enduring almost twenty years of a hollow relationship, Janie’s second husband passes away, and by chance she meets the love of her life; a young man known as Tea Cake. Have you ever realized that a place you have treasured all your life is actually not as perfect as you imagined? That’s what happened to Jacqueline Woodson. As we grow up, our outlook on life changes and sometimes that can be very scary. In When A Southern Town Broke A Heart by Jacqueline Woodson, the author introduces growing up and experiencing change as a central idea in the story. When Woodson was a child, she wanted to think that segregation was a thing of the past.

Questions 1.The arrival of a jet might be a terrifying experience for the entire community because they do not see jets very often only when a cargo plane is dropping off supplies. It also might make it more terrifying for the community because nothing unordinary ever happens so they are taking the jet very seriously and making sure everyone goes indoors. 2. I think that when someone is released from the community they are sent out of the community to live somewhere else.
Oppression has always been prevalent throughout history, and as a response to this, the exploited often revolt, in turn, causing inciteful change. However, when the revolution only seeks revenge, it fosters more violence and creates a more oppressed society. The French Revolution while successful in the sense that it overthrew the government, has one dangerous aspect in common with oppression: violence. This revolution is depicted in A Tale of Two Cities by Dickens, where the persecuted peasants of France start a rebellion to try and achieve revenge government. However, by using violence as the primary method to abolish the government and boasting about the dominance of the revolution through the Carmagnole, the revolutionaries discredit themselves.
Usually considered a controversial novel The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger can often express the feelings of being an outcast and the desire to find a meaning in the world. Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of the novel, though often complains of the phoniness of the world around him, has a way of creating a deeper meaning within the readers. While the truth may be that Salinger purposely set the story in such a way that the readers will be able to connect with Holden, not often do readers find it easy to do so. While Holden believes that everything around him are wicked and phony, there is part of him trying to protect the innocence of those not corrupted by such phoniness. Although Holden wants to protect and save the innocence of children, can he really do so if cannot protect himself and trust those around him.
