The study done by A. Ezekiel Olagoke that is titled “Millennial Muslims: Second Generation Nigerian Muslims in the United States” focused on Millennial Muslims’ experiences with “oppression on the basis of race, religion and youthfulness” in the post 9/11 American society (p. 1). The people involved in the study shared their stories about what life is like being a second-generation immigrant. The study started with background information on the Hart-Cellar Act of 1965, and how the act helped West African immigrants be able to come to the United States. The Hart-Cellar Act “allowed future immigrants to the United States on the basis of their skills, and professions, and not on the basis of their national origins as was the case before” (p. 2). …show more content…

Arguably the most influential event is the attacks on 9/11/2001. The attacks on September 11th “have created not only internal tension among these youths, but also their relationship to the larger world, locally and globally” (p. 3). Because of the attacks, many people think that Muslims are anti-American and are terrorists. The paper is also founded upon the spirituality of the millennial Muslims that are being studied. As Olagoke states, “Most of the interviewees may be young, but in terms of life experiences. . . [they] have spurred them into seeking higher meaning and purpose of life” (p. 4). I did not know much about Muslims before reading this article. I do not know anyone that is Muslim, so I did not get any exposure to the Muslim community. One major thing that shocked me was how much the community was affected by the September 11th attacks. I knew that Arabic people were discriminated against and targeted in hate crimes. I did not realize that the attacks also put a target on Nigerian Muslims. Millennial Muslims have also had to deal with the problems of being second generation immigrants.
