Did you know that people die every day? Whether it’s friends, strangers, or even celebrities, the thought that people die every day is just generally sad no matter who it happens to. Friends, strangers, or even celebrities dying can be sad, but these deaths come nowhere near as devastating as the death of a loved one. This made a lot of the townspeople feel hopeless and even the sight of the bodies made them feel sick or even nauseous. “Evan wasn’t quite ready to look at the bodies yet, so he put an arm around Amanda, who turned to give him a tight hug, her eyes bloodshot” (Rice 136). As stated in the quote, Evan and many others couldn’t even look at the bodies because it made them feel uncomfortable and was very upsetting. As for Amanda, her eyes were left “bloodshot” after seeing the bodies of Jenna and Tara Jones and crying uncontrollably. This demonstrates that losing a loved one can impact you and the people around you permanently. Finally, Auntie Aileen sadly passed away. Auntie Aileen was one of the community's elders and she was loved by many townspeople. She took many charges to ensure the community's survival by rationing food for the townspeople and keeping the Rez in order and she helped Evan see the brighter side of the situation. She talked about how their community had survived before, which comforted Evan. She was also one of the only people who were fluent in their native language, which reminded the townspeople about their culture and heritage. Everyone liked and respected Auntie Aileen, so her death made the town feel very sad as she generally was comforting and pleasant to be around. Some in the town didn't know how to react.
