After reading Mark Rudd’s novel “My Life with SDS and the Weathermen Underground,” I found out that Mark Rudd is a very interesting character. Rudd was a chairman of Columbia University’s SDS chapter. Who also led a six day rebellion throughout the college campus. Taking five university buildings and also he took a dean in as a hostage. Rudd seemed to be very knowledgeable at what he was doing during his rebellion but turned out he was clueless about every decision he made. I know this because Rudd and the SDSers would chant, “We had the vaguest idea of what we were doing.” Rudd showed me something from his actions that going against the government isn’t as hard as others may portray it to be. The way Rudd took hold of the operation is really …show more content…
I believe they hid underground from the government also they took in people and changed the way they thought. These people were mostly runaway and homeless people looking for a place to stay. I was fascinated how Rudd could still expand his underground army even when he has to hide from everyone. No matter how hard authorities tried to stop Rudd and his weathermen they were unable to do so. Law enforcers even tried sending in spies to find out where Rudd was hiding but never could really give a clear answer on where his whereabouts were. Rudd became more powerful as time went by and everyone who was not part of his weathermen knew he was. The thing I found absolutely repulsive was that the underground weathermen would have orgies to satisfy sexual needs. Leading to multiple STDs or as the weathermen called the STDs weather crud. The way the weathermen lived underground was unsanitary and not safe what so ever. Circumstances became worse as time went by also living underground can get really boring as Rudd once …show more content…
This man was able to take over a college campus, controlling five university buildings. Meanwhile building a bigger army of people to help and serve in his rebellion. Rudd was also able to successfully blow up twenty government buildings without harming a single person in them. I never heard of a peaceful but yet violent rebellion, Mark Rudd did something that would be remembered for years to come. He was able to hide from the government underground for seven years something that is unheard of. Also Rudd was able to hide the whole group underground with him. When I read about this I was very astonished and baffled by how a single man can do all of this without having a clue on what he actually is doing. The biggest thing that Rudd ever did was admitting he was wrong about what he was doing. That takes a lot of courage to take a large operation such as the weathermen and shut it down instantly. Rudd came to this decision because of everything that could possibly happen to him and doing this was very hard to do. I enjoyed learning about Mark Rudd and the underground weathermen. I also learned a lot from this book and was really able to enjoy his work and what he
