I’m not your perfect Mexican daughter by Erika L. Sanchez was a book that discussed conflicting topics. This book was a young adult fiction novel with 354 pages. It was about Julia Reyes and her life after her “perfect” sister died and her journey in finding out how imperfect she actually was. Consequently many opinions can be made for this story. In this book I liked how honest the story is.
Between the images of fire, night, and death one that shows up often is death. Death is the image that shows up the most because it is basically what started the whole Holocaust. Hitler and his party’s agenda was to kill of all the Jews. It is also the main focus through the book because many of the Jewish prisoners knew what was supposed to happen to them in the camps. Every single one of them saw the death of many people first hand.
Chapters 1-19 Chapters one through nineteen are very eventful. It starts off with the students going to prom. Dylan and Eric are the main people in the shooting are plotting out the massacre. They plan out to blow a bomb up in the cafeteria then shoot the victims trying to exit the school. The last plan was a mass explosion from vehicles in the parking lot.
The Oklahoma City Bombing What started as a normal day turned into one of the most deadly bombing attacks in Oklahoma’s History. Claiming hundreds of lives, no one could have foretold the damage done by the bomb to the surrounding area nor to the people who have been affected for a lifetime. The Oklahoma City Bombing with lethal effects, was perpetrated by Timothy McVeigh, and caused the government to rethink security measures. Many lives will never be the same after a act of revenge caused catastrophic results. At 9:00 a.m. on April 19,1995, Timothy McVeigh parked a ryder rental truck in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building(“Oklahoma City Bombing”).
The Devil’s Arithmetic, a novel by Jane Yolen, is very inspiring to me. It explains the feelings of not only just Hannah, but many others. It lets me know that in any situation, you can always persevere. Although this book can be sad, the sadness is powerful. It takes you to a whole new perspective of the Holocaust, not just through facts, but actually living it.
Loffreda, Beth. 2000. Losing Matt Shepard. New York, New York: Columbia University Press. The murder of Matt Shepard, and the reason for it, will be remembered.
In the book of The Devil’s Arithmetic and in the movie by the same name, there is one central theme. The saddening theme of remembering what the past is for the Jews and what they struggled with. In the time period these historical fiction stories took place, the Holocaust was just beginning. This was a very dark time for all Jews. Today Jews still face prejudice, in almost every single country.
T. Coraghessan Boyle is a 66 year old American author who describes himself as a “pampered punk” (Boyle). Mr. Boyle used his short story, Greasy Lake to demonstrate not only the shift in the social standard of the era but also the struggles and consequences faced by so many as a result of poor decision making. He described it as an era where “courtesy and winning went out of style” and “where it was good to be bad” (Boyle). The three main characters of this saga, who can only be adequately described as suburban pretenders “who didn’t give a shit about anything”, and want nothing more than to be considered “dangerous” (Boyle).
The Train to Crystal City is a historical fiction novel by Jan Jarboe Russell. It showcases the lives of many people living in the United States and what they had to go through being immigrants from different countries around the world. The way this novel is set up is it follows around multiple characters from different nationalities that are American citizens and how they had to deal with the internment camps and arrests. The title of the novel makes the story sound exciting and hopeful, however, this novel is quite the opposite. Throughout the story, the characters and all immigrants living in the United States during the time of World War II were in danger of being considered illegal aliens, even if they were not.
It made me think about the emotions of different people towards the death of one person. The book All Quiet on the Western Front is about a group of young soldiers serving in World War
Sandy Hook Elementary school was one of the deadliest school shootings in United States history. A twenty year old man named Adam Lanza, killed twenty eight people, including himself (Ray). The police found many articles and books about mass killings at his home (Editors). Today, there are many memorials, including websites and fundraisers to remember everyone that died in this tragic event (My Sandy Hook
Sherman Alexie is one of the best known Native American writers today. He started his famous career with poetry and then wrote several novels and collections of short stories. From one of his novels The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, we receive the short story “This is What it Means to Say Phoenix Arizona” which is also shown through the film Smoke Signals. Throughout this story, we get to see life on the reservation as a Native American. This might be foreign to much of the American population as the Native American culture was quite literally erased from history and the only time we saw them was in movies when they were being killed.
Reading Gilgamesh was important because it gives the reader insight and an understanding of what was important to the people who lived during the time that Gilgamesh was written. It also allows us to see how things have changed from what we are used to reading to what we could have been reading before. Repetition in a story can sometimes seem a little annoying to the reader. However, I think it could be a very important characteristic when reading certain material.
