The book, “The Great Mortality” by John Kelly, explores how the Black Death spread across Europe and Asia from 1347 to 1351 and left a trail of terrors in its path. Kelly describes the history of the plague from witnesses of the disaster. It describes how the black rat flea, Xenopsylla cheopis spread the infection throughout this region, killing over half of the population. Kelly describes the measures taken by the town, the church and health organizations to prevent the Plague from spreading. Although there are many important issues brought to light by Kelly, some offer more discussion and though than others.

Do we control the direction of our lives, or do forces outside of our control determine our destiny? Ernest J. Gaines shows this with Grant, Jefferson. A good example of this would be Grant Wiggins. He shows that even though you may be an educated person, you can’t really choose on what you want to do. If you only have little options to begin with and if that is what society would want to give to you.
Living creatures are not immortal, the fact that they are living automatically has death attached to their existence. Death looms over the human population taking many lives every day, not once failing. During the Holocaust, it came in the form of the Nazis, who used concentration camps as their factories of death. By the end of the Holocaust, 11 million were left dead by the Nazis, 6 million of them being Jewish. A Lesson Before Dying Essay In the novel, A Lesson Before Dying, Ernest J. Gaines recounts the life and struggles of the colored people. He uses memories from his life to give personalities to the characters as well as give an accurate setting. Gaines revisited the south after he moved to California as an attempt to develop a story that related to his people.
Throughout A Lesson before Dying, Ernest J. Gaines writes of Grant Wiggins’s two intertwined struggles to escape different powers in his life. Once Grant Wiggins accepts the power of his responsibilities, a larger power looms over him; racism. The book opens with Grant Wiggins recalling a trial, where a young black man, Jefferson, was wrongfully accused of murder. In an attempt to free his client, Jefferson’s lawyer refers to Jefferson as a mindless hog, who could not have known what he was doing. The case was lost, and Jefferson was sentenced to death by the judge.
In the early 1500s there were both economic and religious causes of German peasants revolts along with negative and positive responses to these rebellions. Germany in the early 1500s was fragmented by religion and social class. Revolts among the lower classes became relevant after the Renaissance, the posting of Martin Luther’s 95 theses in 1517, and after the Edict and Diet of Worms in 1521. Since the idea of humanism and the formation of the Protestant branch of religion, the peasants of Germany were dissatisfied with their religious and economic lives which led to revolts. As a result, several world leaders opinionated their different views which consisted of wether the rebellions in Germany were harmful or beneficial to the community.
In this setting, family and relationships mean very little. Most people are desensitized to death and suffering, and even when tragedy strikes, people are too numb to react. Clarisse mentions, “I’m afraid of children my own page. They kill each other.” (Bradbury 30). An operator says, “We get these [suicide] cases nine or ten a night.
In Sherwin B. Nulands novel How We Die: Reflections On Life’s Final Chapter, author Sherwin Bernard Nuland was an American surgeon and writer who taught bioethics, history of medicine, and medicine at the Yale School of Medicine, and occasionally bioethics and history of medicine at Yale College. Nulands novel, How We Die: Reflections On Life’s Final Chapter, Nuland discusses essentially, death. The specific topics in the novel that are covered are the means and methods in which people die, composed in seven different different events that end in death for most individuals.
In the novel A Lesson Before Dying, the author Ernest J. Gaines shows how racism destroys personal identity and human dignity, yet he also emphasizes the importance of overcoming these challenges and finding that lost identity and dignity in difficult times. Gaines shows the challenges African Americans deal with, because of systematic racism, through Grant and Jefferson, who are humiliated throughout the book. He also shows the empowerment and overcoming of these challenges through the transformation of Jefferson. The influence of racism on self perception is evident through Jefferson and how he treats himself throughout the novel. A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines tells a story about a school teacher in the south during the 1950’s and a man who has been wrongly convicted of murder. The main conflict in A Lesson Before Dying is between the school teacher Grant Wiggins and Jefferson, a convicted murder. The main conflict in this story has been resolved because Grant has succeeded in having Jefferson regain his pride and feel like a man, and not a hog going to the execution chair. This resolution relates to the emerging theme of how an internal sense of pride is important in life, by showing how Jefferson’s mental journey of being wrongly accused and convicted is healed by relearning his sense of worth. When Jefferson is writing in his journal to Grant he says,

Unfortunately, assisted living facilities have a history of being problematic. When taking this in to account, it is important to consider why families may admit their loved ones in to assisted living facilities.
Furthermore, Carruthers’s stance on the matter is viewed from a contractualists perspective. Contractualism, as defined in Caruthers book, “...views mortality as the result of an imaginary contract between rational agents, who are agreeing upon rules to govern their subsequent behaviour.” (Carruthers, 1999, p. 35). He provides an example of animal cruelty, in which he says, “Such actions are wrong [using a cat as a dart-board] because they are cruel. They betray an indifference to suffering that may manifest itself...in that person’s dealings with other rational agents.”
Consequently, this study conducted shows that children of incarcerated parents needs assistance with dealing with grief through counseling or other type of programming. However, children have different coping mechanisms when dealing with their loss of a parent who was on death row. For instance, some children would deny it and others would fight their father 's’ execution. Additionally, the parents encouraged their children to follow their hopes and dreams despite their father’s death
When you hear the word death or you hear that someone has died today in the news or on the television I know a lot of people think “Man, I feel sorry for the family that they have to go through that.” or they thank god that it was not them or their family members.” Sadly though people try to push away death and push away the fact that everyone dies at one point in time. This is even truer when they witness their own family member in the hospital with a critical condition that the doctors cannot fix even with modern medicines on the doctor’s side. Another such time would be when a person’s family member is diagnosed with an incurable sickness that is fatal.
