“Once More to The Lake”, by E.B. White expresses the connection between his past and the present. I believe that White is trying to show his experiences in that lake. By making the connection between the two experiences it shows signs of nostalgia. White tries to relay his messages to the readers through his emotions and his way of speech.

The essay showcases many indications of nostalgia. This feeling of nostalgia originates from the lake that White would frequently visit with his dad when he was younger. In his written work, he gets to a particular point where his feelings take control and bring him back to the past. The activities that he does with his son remind him of what he would use to do with his father. At some point in time, he starts to think back about the odor of wet woods and how he would escape the camp and begin canoeing without his dad's consent. The nostalgia comes from the recollections of his past rehashing themselves in the present. However, the main difference is that he is his dad and his son is him. “I began to sustain the illusion that he was I, and therefore, by simple transposition that I was my father.” White also states, "There has been no years passed by." He experiences many similar occurrences that happened within the past. As times slowly winds down, he feels as though he is stuck in a loop. White says that he, “... missed terribly the middle alternative.” He realizes that history is beginning to repeat itself and there has been no change in the things that happened. In his essay he mentions how there a thunderstorm was approaching and everyone at the camp was exciting to go into the lake during this time, including his son. By this time he had realized that his life was coming to an end and that he should stop denying
