During the first few pages of the book, Ourika was living a more extravagant life than other blacks during her time under Mme de B. She rescued Ourika from slavery and wanted Ourika to accomplished everything. But all Ourika wanted was to please Mme de B. As the book continues Ourika hears the conversion of Mme de B and her friend and this is where she starts realizing that her perspective in life has been hidden by Mme de B.
