In the book Paper Wishes, By: Lois Sepahban, Manami lives with her family until she and her family have to leave and stay at a prison camp. Manami tried to bring her dog, Yujiin. But Yujiin got taken away because they don’t allow dogs in the camp. She had to live in grief at the camp, and suffers miserably until they are free, Manami was happy she can finally live in peace with her family and that she got her voice back. In this book I think family requires sacrifice and there are many examples in the book that show that, such as, when Ron visited his family at the camp. Also when the guards took away Yujiin, those are just some of the examples in the book.

Also when Ron got a job he could have been learning instead of working, but he had to support them and give up learning. I think Ron is a great character and shows this very well, he puts his family first no matter the circumstance.
There are other examples in the book such as when the guards took away Yujiin. Manami tried to smuggle him into the camp but it didn’t work and she got caught. Yujiin got taken away and Manami was heartbroken. But Manami had to let the guards take him because family is more important so she had to sacrifice Yujiin. “Wait” he shouts. Everyone freezes, Father, Grandfather, Mother, even the other people in line. “What are you hiding” he asks me. Father looks at me then Mother. I look down, I press my lips closed “girl” the soldier says, “What is under your coat?” Mother unbuttons my coat, revealing Yujiin sitting in my forearm, pressed against the side. In that scene Manami was going to give Yujiin away until Mother unbuttoned her coat. She had to sacrifice her dog for her family. If they did not take Yujiin then Manami would have put her family in danger. Manami sacrifices for her family because she puts them first so they can be safe. This scene was a great example of “family requires sacrifice” because it showed how Manami had to pick between her Yujiin and her family, and obviously she chose her family because in order to keep the family intact and safe she has to
