The world premiere of The Pinsky Project at the LHUCA was nothing short of an eye opening success. Throughout the course of the show Toots, Sonny, Rose, Molly, and Dave take us on a journey back and forth through time in order to create a full picture of who they were and how their experiences affected one another. Pin begins the show by simply wondering who he is, what happened in the past that affected his life, and how he arrived at his current situation. Before the show began I read Robert Pinsky’s Poem With Lines in Any Order. This immediately caught my attention and made me wonder in what order these events happened to form a full story and how were these people in the poem affected by the events that occurred in the poem. The ability to age with only voice and body language is extremely difficult and the actors that played those characters were fully committed to the separate scenes and I fully believed them when they were teens, as well as when they were elderly. Additionally, one of my favorite aspects of the show was the brother and sister relationship between Sonny, and Toots. The sibling dynamic was incredible and they worked together well. The first time I noticed this was during the scene when they were sitting on the ground looking through photographs. The dialogue in this scene was interesting but low energy, and this gave the actors the opportunity to establish who they were and immediately established the relationship that the audience saw grow throughout the show. I adored the scene when they meet in purgatory. Although, they had never been close and life Molly and Rose bonded and empathized with each other in the afterlife. This scene was a contrast from the rest of the play in that the lighting was brighter, and the music had a lighter feel, almost happy. This was due to the thought that they escaped the troubles of the earth for the happiness and trouble free activities of the afterlife. I think this is a very interesting scene because for the majority of the scene they were not aware that they were talking about the same man. The two women, especially Molly’s, life was greatly affected by the other. I believe that Molly somewhat blamed Rose for the pain she felt in life, but in death they were both able to empathize with each other from the other point of view. This created a dynamic unlike anything else in the play. However, I did not feel like I ever received full characterization for Molly. Throughout the show she was sometimes a harsh assertive woman toward Dave, but then at other times she was meek and did not address Dave like she had in previous scenes. Even though the scenes were not in order, I never really saw her full character and never fully understand her goals and
