In 1961 Robert Penn Warren work a book titled The Legacy of the Civil War. This book of his was published by Bison Books. Warren’s Legacy of the Civil War consisted of exactly 109 pages, plus some extra blank pages for notes. This book may seem a bit short for a history subject, but it is packed with lots of information to offer to a researcher or a history enthusiast. This piece of work has information ranging from the death toll of the war itself to the economical disaster it caused in the south. Warren leaves out no interesting information. Robert Penn Warren is a poet and a novelist with an interest in the subject of history. Primary sources are the best kind of sources one can get. There is not mixing up information since it comes directly from the witness themselves. Whatever Warren saw, he wrote for this book. When a writer writes a book they do it with a purpose. It is to either to inform, persuade or to even entertain. In this case, persuading was not the purpose since Warren was not bias towards a certain side of the war and trying to persuade the reader whether the south or north caused the war like other books on the civil war do. All the Warren does is simply inform, with a touch of entertainment. All his information is clear, and his entertainment comes from his writing style which many readers can appreciate in a writer. Warren does have lots to say about the North and South during the Civil War, but he does not favor one over the other as explained earlier. He does state that the south and the north are to blame for the war. Though, he is from the south he does explain why they did have a fault in it. Keeping in mind that he is not bias towards neither side, this does raise the quality of the book. It helps the reader understand both sides of the story and keep their mind on the topic and not towards a certain group by being bias towards a specific side.
