In 1987, Ronald Reagan gave one of his most famous speeches at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, that forever changed the conflict between Germany and Communism. Just two years after this famous speech the Berlin Wall fell and communism crippled under pressure from the rest of the World. Ronald Reagan will forever be remembered for his speech that is known to have ended Communism. When World II was coming to an end in 1945, there were two peace conferences at Yalta and Potsdam to divide Germany between the “allied forces”. They decided to split Germany into four “allied occupied zones” where East Germany was the Soviet Union's and West Germany was divided among the allies of Great Britain, the United States, and France. Berlin was located well in East Germany, but was divided basically the same as Germany, where the east was the Soviets and the west the other three allies. The speech took place at the Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin. Reagan then challenged Gorbachev by saying “Secretary General Gorbachev, if you seek peace-if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe-if you seek liberalization: come here, to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” Reagan also went on talk about serious arms reductions with the United States. Reagan wanted to see actions taken between the Soviets and United States to improve Cold War tensions. Two years after Reagan’s famous speech East and West Berliners went out with hammers and picks and began to chip away at the wall.
