When two people become friends after awhile they start to become more and more like each other. Eventually they will basically be the same person. But if one of the friends leaves the other is stuck with the characteristics of the lost friend. This changes the person in many different way just like the island changed the boys only it didn 't leave them. A group of British boys are stranded on an island. They need to survive until they are rescued. The boys start to become savage and more like animals the longer they stay on the island. Savage or not, these boys are changing on this island. Their hair, clothes, and actions are all becoming more animalistic. The longer the boys stay on this island the more savage they will become and another person is going to die. This savagery assists the deterioration of their civilization. Ralph, who is considered to be the protagonist of the story, considers the boys savages for their inabilities – inabilities to keep order, to build a fire, to have meetings. He focuses on what they are not able to do because it is easier than looking at what they have proven themselves capable of. “Just an ordinary fire. You’d think we could do that, wouldn’t you? Just a smoke signal so we can be rescued. Are we savages or what?” (Golding 19). This quote explains that the boys know they are becoming more savage the longer they stay on the island.
