Subject: In this short rhetorical read, the subject is how you should handle racial, sexual, and rude remarks in a public scenario. The author reveals the subject throughout the essay, and through sub stories explaining where such scenarios including these slurs are present. In this short essay, the subject is proposed immediately in the first to third paragraphs. The author talks about an anti-Semitic slur made by a coworker. No, there is not more than one subject.

Occasion: In this essay, the time period is the 1990’s. Unfortunately Diane Cole does not specify a place in her writing, but if I had to guess I would say upstate New York. Cole does not flat out say who this is for, but she talks about scenarios regarding a full spectrum of age groups. Cole does not make any assumptions about the reader or who this is intended for.

Purpose: The purpose of this essay is to show/tell people to stand up for themselves. Diane is trying to help all victims tell the person who is making the slur that they need to stop, whether they realize they are offending them or not. The purpose is implied, Diane never says the purpose of this essay is____, but she hints so it is implied like I said above.

Speaker: Diane Cole is the speaker in this essay. Right off the bat we can assume that Cole has been the victim of a slur, why else would she be writing about this? Of, course she could be writing about this just to help, but lets assume the first. She was born in 1952 in Baltimore, Maryland and revived quite a nice education. She was enrolled at Radcliffe college, and Johns Hopkins University. She is quite an accomplished author, and has even written for the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. She is a woman in the middle upper class, if not upper class due to her education and her writing skills. She seems to have a very stable emotional state to be able to have worked for such important
