Historical archeology helps understand of how the modern world was shaped. Even the smallest a artifact can play a major role of discovering ways of how people of the past lived their lives. Throughout this assignment, In Small Things Forgotten: An Archaeology of Early American Life by James Deetz, was more helpful than the rest of the reading assignments. “Collections in museums have preserved a vast wealth of American artifacts: ceramics, metalwork and glassware have their archaeological counterparts, and many materials that the archaeologist rarely has access to, such as leather, paper, fabric, and wood available for study” (Deetz, 1996: np). Leather, paper, fabric, and wood items are small artifacts, or small things, that can be digged up to be examined. Examining an old house many not give much information, because a house only has one used, compared to examining a clay pot. A house is only used for shelter, whereas a clay pot has multiple uses. Clay pots can be used for cooking, transferring water to one place to another place, or can be used for storage. To understand how clay pots were used, it is best for the clay pots to be examined of how they were made in the past. Anthropologists can examined the small details of a pot to see what was the uses of it, including the size, shape, and weight of it. Also, because of most of the pot were made out of clay, fingerprints can be studied. From the fingerprints, anthropologists can see if there was a “go to” person when making clay pots within the past communities and can trace her or his family …show more content…

Of course there was writings and records from non-African Americans, but there was no experience of being a slave, therefore information from these writings and records were not as helpful. These writings and records gave insight of how slaves were treated and worked passed limited, but no knew what was happening behind closed doors. “Although relatively few people wrote in early America, and what was written captured the personal bias of recorder” (Deetz, 1996: np). The writings and records were only from a personal point of view and not by facts, therefore it will be hard image of how a slave was really feelings or what they will thinking. Many wondered how slaves still had the courage to live after being tortured day out and day in. Was it because slaves had a tight family household? Was it because they had nowhere to go? Was there was still hope that one day they will be free? Every question I asked can found from artifacts that was left behind by the brave souls and even the smallest things can help out everyone’s
