In Sonia Sotomayor’s, My Beloved World, she begins her story with an insulin shot that neither parent can fulfill for her child. Her father’s hands tremble too much and he stabs Sonia while her mother stabs her with the needle even harder. Sonia’s mother taught her how to boil the syringe and needle to use for the insulin shot. This was after Sonia was diagnosed with Diabetes. Sonia would learn how to use her time efficiently in the mornings at the age of 8 to remove the burden from their parents. Sonia’s parents would always fight when they were home together. Her dad was an alcoholic and would start drinking right after he cooked for Junior and Sonia. Sonia’s mother, Celina, handled this by taking night shifts at the hospital as a nurse and avoiding him. Sonia’s relatives lived near each other in a neighborhood in South Bronx.
When Sonia was young she liked to eavesdrop on the adults. One time she overheard her uncles talking about how much of a mess their place and how there was never milk or toilet paper. No milk normally due to her father shaking and spilling the milk. “Papi was pouring a glass for me, and his hands were shaking so badly the milk spilled all over the table.”(Sotomayor 2013 p.15) As a result, Sonia always kept the apartment clean so no one would talk bad about their place and visit more often.
