According to Stephen King, horror movies can serve as a beneficial purpose. In his essay, “Why We Crave Horror Movies,” he elaborates further on his stance that we all have some type of mental illness. His explanation on his quote, “I think that we’re all mentally ill; those of us outside the asylums only hide it a little better, (King 534)” can be narrowed down to two main reasons. The first reason is that we all, as humans, feel the need for entertainment and the adrenaline rush that comes with excitement and fear. The second main reason behind “our mental illness,” is that we all have a psychological need that needs to be attained.
We as humans crave the need for entertainment and adrenaline rushes, but we all show it in diverse ways. Without the need for entrainment and adrenaline rushes, places like the movie theaters and Six Flags would not be in business. We fulfill our need by watching the latest horror movie, whether to show that we are not afraid or to show that we entice the adrenaline rush. The latest horror box office movie is IT, coincidentally the movie is based on a novel from Stephen King. I recently went to go watch this movie, for the sole reason of entertainment. We all are mentally ill in some way or fashion. We watch gruesome and disturbing movies for entertainment purposes to feel the adrenaline rush that comes with excitement and fear. We also use these types of movies to give us a psychological need of a sense of normalcy. Everyone in the theater is okay with the gruesome and disturbing scenes, which gives “mentally ill” people a sense of security that they really aren't all that different.
